Yah, insufficient data on a fully modded IX w/upgraded turbo vs an VIII with same mods. I'd expect to see more area under the curve and higher numbers on pump gas due to the coolant passages in the head, but when going all out with C16, I'm not so sure.

That is a VERY significant difference in stock form. The 05 is not as drastic, but it is still a measurable difference (.1-.2/1-2mph).
I want to see some slips from stock 03-04s and stock 06s. Can someone point me to the best of each?

Drag racing forum...

Several IXs have done 12.9s and one has done 12.8 (that's just on this forum). However, only the extremely rare and exceptional 03 ran a 12.9 while most did 13.3-13.4 with good driving. Some of the IXs who hit 12.9s stock did so with only so-so driving and weak 60's. The trap speeds are usually 101-103 on an 03/04 and 105-107 on an 06. This, of course, all depends on many factors, but I'm referring to many examples and trying to ignore the outliers/poor driving. Even the 05s were consistently faster on average in stock form than the 03/04s. My stock best (first try) was 13.1@104 on a weak 1.92 60' while fighting the 5k limiter.

I think Warr is right here. If you took them all to a track (03-06) the IX's would trap higher and get quicker ET's than the rest, no question. Of course this is assuming that everyone running is a great driver and the track/ weather conditions are optimal. So stock for stock the IX is faster and quicker but its hard to really gauge unless your at a track. When you start modding the IX its gameover. You get a TBE and a tune and your putting down AT LEAST 330whp but more likely closer to 350whp depending on the car and the tune. To get 350whp on the VIII means your spending a bunch more $ than the guy with the IX, such as cams and other bolt ons. But hey, they're both evo's so no matter what you're lovin life.

I dunno about that. I have been keeping an eye on the drag forums and I see a good number of people running comparable times in a IX and then everyone (including you) suggests something is wrong with their car.

What we really need is an UP-TO-DATE time-slip registry with some base runs.

I swapped cars recently with a buddy who drives a IX to my 05 VIII. We both put down similar numbers on the same dyno- 350/348whp, 343/332wtq. He has TBE/Ecutek flash to my TBE, cams, techtom flash. First thing I noticed was the off boost driveability. There seemed to be much less lag as the car just got up and went, but seemed to lose steam up top. Side by side on a closed road the VIII from 3rd through part of 5th would pull about 2 cars right off the bat and hold it every time.

The IX's dont see the huge improvement the VIII's do in the cam department. On the VIII that is basically your biggest bang for the buck mod besides TBE or MBC.

the IX is supposed to be better, they are more $$. I like my 8 as there are less parts to break, considering that the evo likes to break parts. Seriously, we need to stop the evo on evo crimes, and get back to the evo on sti crimes.

stock for stock the IX makes more power and torque comes in a touch lower thus making the car feel more linear, perhaps due to the Mivec, who knows for sure.

Line up side by side a stock IX MR pulled every so slightly on a VIII w/ a TBE (nothing else) on my 'trials'. I think anyone describing it as 'much faster' or 'huge difference' is a bit overkill.

I think it's safe to just leave it at "the IX is an improvment over the VIII". It doesn't kill it, it just addresses some things. But yeah, it sure seems to take to mods better.

This is like the arguments over at the Z forums. It goes back and forth about HP vs TQ. Once Nissan put out the 300HP/260TQ engine (compared to the original 287HP/270TQ engine) there have been countless threads.

Whichever one you have is "the best".
