I laughed when I saw this thread was going again. It's been so long that I called most of the other people retards for thinking that it had a clear coat.

Take it to a body shop and ask them, they will tell you it is a single stage paint

Its not bs, red had a single stage. (clear is mixed in) BBY might have, but I know red for sure.

I know I'm joining this convo late, but it could be a single-stage paint - in which case there wouldn't be a clearcoat. If that was the case, you could get some rubbing compound and you could rub the color off, litterly. If you were to sand it, it would come off colored.

I know some companies still put singlestage paint on their cars - they do it because it's cheaper.

Only if you didn't take care of the paint at all. SS paint is a lot better than it used to be in the past but it is still the cheaper alternative.

I have not checked the IX's to see if the Red's have clear because I don't know anyone with one.

But Rally Red is not for sure. Any paint shop will tell you this when they pull the code.
This man speaks the troof.....

When I was rearended, the body shop called me and told me to come down. He explained that the car didn't have a clear coat on it and he wanted me to understand that it may look a little different once he's done with it cause he was gonna use clear.

He basically showed me by sanding on the car. If a car has clear on it, it will be a white dust. If it doesn't, it will be a dust of whatever the color the car is. Just so happened that when he sanded on my car a redish dust fell to the floor.

If you still don't believe, get some rubbing compound and try for yourself....

I came over from the MR2 community and there was a large discussion about the Crimson Red 91-92 MR2 paint and the lack of clear coat because of the tendency to fade. The conclusion was that it was in fact a single-staged paint, and that it did tend to fade more-so than the Super Red 93+ MR2's which I guess had additional clear on it.

Hmm. My old 04 rs rr evo the paint was very weak. I used to use the wrong soap while washing it(thankfuly I learned my lesson) and it was starting to look pink and chip like crazy but ihad always thought it was becuase of me using the wrong soap on it. This no clear coat is all news to me....but red still looks very baddass to me :]

I have yet to see a red Evo but I think you can tell if it has a clear coat if you see light swirl marks maybe.

My Red MR2, i beilieve it was crimson red, had no clear. I think it was a signle stage enamel. WHen i bought it, it was pink from fading. Nothing some compound couldn't fix. After that I just kept a thick coat of wax on the car. I'll tell you everyone thought i repainted it, Muwahhaahah.

Probably not....

If you REALLY REALLY need to know.....take some rubbing compound and rub somewhere thats not very noticable and see. If you rub and the pad turns pink it doesnt' have clear on it.

I used rubbing compound before on my 05 RR and it got a little pink on the pad so I stopped using it...However I really am not very happy with the paint quality in general...Rock chips on the hood are too common and even with my wash, clay bar, polish, and wax it still left a bit to be desired...I need to pick up some of that stuff he was using on autogeek

As fas as I know, the only paints Mitsu used clear on is the pearl/metallic paints like Tarmac Black, Apex Silver, and Electric Blue. I may be wrong though. Only way to find out is either get in a wreck or take some rubbing compound to it and see for yourself.
