exh temp gauge
exh temp gauge
just ordered a stewart warner exhaust temp gauge from 42 draft designs. they sent me the gauge out of the box w. not accesories. i have no sensor for the temp gauge. the boost gauge came w. out the tubing. ive bought these gauges before and it has came with everything. i would never order again from them. so now do i have to go and buy a specific sensor for the exhaust temp or can i just get one at my local auto parts store?
You can buy just the probe.

TRE is suppost to have a good fast acting one. I'm going to pick one up when the time comes (scroll down to Temp Probe);

SW guages are just poorly made and are of poor quality. Installation is a ***** since your must splice ALL the wiring. There are no plastic clips to connect the wiring. You basically have to connect 4 wires for each guage. To top it off, the lighting on one guage may be different than another guage from SW. I wouldn't say they are the most accurate either. It makes no sense to sell a guage without the sensor.
Evan from 42 here...
In almost all cases our gauges DO NOT come with sending units. Why? We offer many different senders, tubing kits, and probe kits. Customers want to use their own parts. We don't argue, we just sell everything separately so that everyone is happy. Our website clearly explains what is and is not included.
The boost gauge does not come with the tubing kit - we offer a diesel and a standard version. The EGT gauge does not come with the probe kit. We offer SW's 1/4" street probe kit for $50. Many customers like to try different EGT probes, and we don't argue.
One thing we do that others don't is build and include wiring kits with all of our gauges. Each gauge comes with 18 gauge wire for all connections and terminal connectors for the gauge and senders. This is built into our price, we do not charge extra.
Also, our gauges are bought in bulk. We don't see the need in wasting paper boxes when we don't need to. There's nothing inside that retail packaging that you're losing out on. Trust me.
To answer your question - you are best off using the SW probe. VDO, Autometer and SW probes all differ in their grounding methods and ranges. I would not reccomend mixing and matching probes.
