My wife was reading this thread over my shoulder and I quickly collapsed the page as if she caught me browsing ****.
I cracked my ring land on the #4 piston running TBE and AEM EMS. I think the fuel system gave out. Ran great for one month, then a lean condition caused detonation. Its my fault for not installing the Walbro sooner. I posted the pics back in April.

It makes me wonder if the Evo pistons are not as strong across the piston face -- or stronger in the ring lands than most.
Anyway, I agree that detonation breaks engines. And trying to squeeze 350+ out of a stock motor on pump gas WILL result in detonation. Even with methanol, 370 awhp is huge power, and one detonation incident could be catastrophic.

I agree, I have seen stock pistons also split in half in a strange way, however, thankfully the failure rate is very low. On one customer's car the piston was split directly down the middle in a clean split from side to side and the bore was 100% perfect.
The evo piston and rod bearing seem to be the weakest links in an otherwise very strong motor.

When the bearings look perfect but you have this problem, you have too much power and torque, period.

I'm pushing over 400 Whp reving to 8K on stock springs and retainers and never had a problem. plus I have just about 60K miles on the all stock internals. no meth just bigger turbo. I change the oil at 2800-3000 miles and keep up with all the maintence. meth is for drag racing not everyday driving. my egt's are super low because I have better air flow. running the car too lean will kill a motor fast.

There is no such thing as "pre-detonation". FYI.
