Question Double sided tape really needed for wing?

Went wingless for a few days just to try something new...while at times I love the wingless look, it's time for the stocker to go back on. My question is this...is the double sided tape really necessary for my reinstall? whats the point if there are already two bolts per side...also I think I'm just going to get an RS or carbon trunk for my wingless days...my car looks super ghetto with white electrical tape covering the holes haha

you dont need tape but you will end up scratching the trunk without it. it doesnt matter if you will NEVER take the wing off again but you never know...

ya i don't think im too worried about scratching the paint...just worried if there is going to be a gap or anything since i have these small black pieces of plastic that hold the rivets in place on each side...i think that would raise the wing a bit leaving an air gap if there was no tape...would this be bad?

I used some thin foam window insulation. Should help with the scratches and any rattling, plus it will be easy to remove in the future as it's only sticky on one side.

Doesn't the double sided tape help take some stress off the bolts? Just curious.

Yes, and it stops water from getting into your trunk and from water sitting in between the wing and soon to be scracted unprotected trunk lid.

Actually, it does NOT stop water from getting in your trunk. The two holes for the wing are outside of the trunk seal, so any water that gets into those holes will end up running through the channels to the outside of the seal and back to the ground.

when i removed my wing it seemed like it didn't do anything, i pulled my wing off with just a little pull. I doubt it would make the wing stay in place. If anything it would just prevent rubbing/scratching

Trunk specialist are one of EvoMs biggest assets, and we appriciate your unquestioned knowledge regarding the passage of run off water entering through the unsealed rear opening, but if you remove your trunk lid and replace it with out the seal, water will end up on the floor of the trunk. Besides, I believe that the two large bolts that screw into the spoiler from inside the trunk, have no secondary water deflection but the stock seal. I speak through personal experience. Mostly, I would be worried about rust, which appeared because water was sitting in between the spoiler and deck lid where the paint and clear coat once was.(caused by friction with no foam)

I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to say here, but as far as there being a problem with rust due to rubbing off the paint and clear coat, that may happen. As far as getting water in the trunk because of not sealing those holes, it is not possible. If you get water in your trunk it has nothing to do with the holes for the wing, but is an issue with they trunk seal. I'm not sure where anyone mentioned removing the trunk lid, but that is an entirely separate issue from removing the wing. THE TAPE BETWEEN THE WING AND THE TRUNK DOES NOT HAVE ANY EFFECT ON WATER ENTERING THE TRUNK. You can argue that point if you'd like, but you will be wrong. I drove with my wing removed during heavy rain and also washed my car without plugging the holes and never had any water enter the trunk. I agree that there should be some barrier to prevent the rattling and scratching, but there is no sealing benefit to using tape.

I agree with Paul: The wing holes are outside the OEM trunklid weatherstripping, so they drain into the trunk's rain gutter, not the trunk.

As did Paul, I used some foam weatherstripping to prevent the wing pillars from rubbing on the deacklid paint. Works fine. No problems after six months and 7,000 miles.

Yeah, P-Paul, I have to agree with you too, bra and I don't like to argue. Everybody please ignor any posts made by me last night. My padna came down from Larose and he had this badass herb called kali mist. Bra, let me tell you, it took me about 4 hours for me to come back to planet earth. After that I was good. Oh, the water in my trunk lid would sit and not drain until I would open the trunk spiling on my trunk crap. But I had open trunk holes and now I have a rs lid.
