that's to remove weight and reduce drag.

that extra downforce isn't needed in the 1/4 mile. there are other measurements of "fast" other than ETs and traps.

I like both. The huge wing actually fits really good on the evos body but i like the wingless look also. Its less flashy.

Guys, read this thread:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=205084

There isn't any downforce; it's all lift which may be driven by a lack of a rear diffuser.

It's somewhat romantic to think that the wing generates downforce in our cars, but wind tunnel tests tell a different story. I've always loathed the wing and planned to take it off my SE at my first opportunity. Now that I've been living with, I'm starting to dislike it less. I still can't say that I like it, but I don't hate it as much as I did.

Most of all, it's the legacy aspect of the wing that's holding me back; Evos have always had them. I also have a general philosophical issue with modding my car for the sake of appearance. I still may replace the trunk lid; I'm just not in as much of a hurry as I once was. All this said, if I could change one thing about the car, it would be the inclusion of a wing-delete option.

Thanks, it's probably too low, tires are flush with the tops of the wheel wells.

This is not true. The wing DO PROVIDE downforce.
It is the total package that result in a little upforward lift.

At that high speed, massive air flow under the car, and they produce lift.
The spoiler will provide some downforce to counteract that lift.

In the windtunnel study, we see that the end result is a small rear lift
Without the wing, the rear lift will be bigger.

the Sti may have a positive downforce, but the whole picture is you have
a head light and tail heavy car at high speed, which may not be a good thing.
The car behave very differently than at normal speed.
The evo is more balance, the car is less planted at high speed, but the behavior
is very predictable, as if you are driving at around 70mph or 80mph...

That's basically what I said, or at least I thought I did:

The fact remains that our cars do not see downforce in the rear. Perhaps it's the wing that's helping the car to generate less lift at higher speeds - I don't know enough about the subject to speculate either way. I do know that I felt no difference whatsoever between a wingless IX and my winged SE.

Damn straight. An Evo isn't Evo without the disgustly huge picknick bench of a rear spoiler. I for one, do believe it does have a positive effect on handling, but I wouldn't want to remove it even if it didn't =)

Why did you not get another one? Is it because you wanted an AC and ABS? The ABS alone will be good reason enough to get a standard Evo. You can always take the wing off and plug up the holes with bondo, sand it and paint it. It should not be too hard.

My RS met its untimely death when some jerk ran a red light. I didn't get another, because of the headlights. I do a lot of night driving and my ageing eyes aren't what they used to be. I decided that having better headlights was more important to me than not having a wing. I liked the BBS' and the rear wiper, as well. If the SE had not been available, I would have bought another RS. I could care less about ABS and all RS' come with AC, not that it matters a lot to me, either. If it's hot, I just roll down all the windows and go faster :-)

I'd like to keep the winged lid, if I do replace it. I don't plan on selling the car and it may be nice to install the original lid/wing in some years. We'll see. I'd like to get a few quotes, but it won't be until Spring. Maybe by that point I'll dislike the wing even less.

I agree, our cars do not see downforce in the rear.
But, the fact remains that our cars handle better at high speed with the wing on.
Without the wing, too much lift on the back. Therefore, the wing is functional.

Anyway, I would still go wingless!
