You're asking for speculation based on a set of clues whose true meaning is yet to be defined. That's the polar opposite of a fact.

That very well may be. Please keep in mind that non-USDM cars are equipped with rear diffusers, which one has to assume help the design generate some downforce. If not, one has to question the whole exercise.

Given the wind tunnel results we have, one thing can be said with a degree of confidence. Mitsubishi released an Evo into the USDM whose rear that sees lift at higher speeds. Someone more cynical would ask why Mitsu didn't implement a US-legal rear diffuser - if that's what's causing the lift - given your faith in the firm's aim toward automotive excellence.
The rear diffuser on the JDM Evo 9 is purely cosmetic. It does nothing. I'm not trying to be hostile or anything, but if you look closely at the rear diffuser you will notice that it's totally worthless. It does not even go underneath the car. It ends at the bottom portion of the rear bumper. When you look at race cars you will see that they go underneath for a certain length depending on the application to produce actual downforce.

funny i just got my wing sprayed and drove around with out for a couple weeks. i definately like the wing more but you can feel the diffrence on the strip with it off. the car just feels lighter in the rear. but unstable at high mph. anyway put mine back on. i like the wing better. its just always been a part of the evo line up. even my 4 has a huge wing.

Do you know this for sure, or are you speculating? I mean, is there data that suggests this to be the case?

Thanks for the input.

Just take a look at a pic of the JDM Evo 9 rear bumper. You seem to know a bit about aerodynamics and after looking at it you will figure out that it's just there for looks. Just to make things clear I'm not talking about the vortex generator on the roof.

i like it the most w/ the wing visually, but as for cops and stuff the wing off is always a good choice too

Vigo is correct, the JDM rear bumper does nothing in the way of aerodynamics.

question for the group

how hard is it to take the wing off?

is it just a matter of unscewing four bolts ore is there more to it?

i am going to take the wing off but want the option easily put it back on. I am pretty sure it will look great in my office when I am not using it on the car.

I've noticed no loss in stability, nor any gain from a reduction in drag.

I have however, seen a dramatic decrease in the number of douchebags hanging around me while I'm driving, or revving at me from across intersections, or from drivethrus, or in front of my house, etc, etc, etc.

Some of you guys act like these minute data points are going to cause catastrophic disaster while driving. I'm just waiting for someone to tell me that without the wing, if I exeede 88mph that the loss in downforce is going to cause my car to bend space and time, and as a result, go back to the future.

Better not tell the Mitsu Engineers Can Do No Wrong squad. :-)

Given the wind tunnel results, that's a very discouraging concept.

For most of the people driving these cars--they will never drive at a level to see a difference anyway.

I was thinking about getting the JDM bumper but also noticed that the fins didn't go under the car--so I opted against spending the xtra cash. I think it looks good though...outside of the exhaust looking like it sticks out too far.

myself included....lol. I don't know if I can afford the trip to the track, and then the 4mpg mileage during the racing all day!

I drive like a granny coming home from work because of all the cops. But I did had a chance to pull a 4-wheel slide coming around a gravel filled corner--that was fun--she pulled right through with just a slight feathering of the throttle. Gotta love it.

I've driven in excess of 125 mph with and without the wing. I have not noticed any difference. My EVO is lowered which MAY afford less lift due to the POSSIBILITY of less air flow under the car. So stock ride height EVOs might perform diferently.
