MA Exaust Laws...

So... I have seen multiple threads from people... One from Tanabe... and another with the Sema Action Network stating MA laws were silenced for the "Modified exhaust".

Yet once again yesterday I got ticketed for a modified exhaust and Plate Number infraction or something worded like that.

I had to ask to cop what the number one was all about and he said since I had the (Z1auto.com) Plate holder around it was blocking the plate and I could not see it all etc.

It shows EVERYTHING except the "Spirit of American" on the plate.

I also got a exhaust ticket about a month ago that I am fighting tomorrow morning at the Stoughton district court so we shall see what happens.

This is really starting to get annoying with the cops stereotyping and harassing us. I think I see a new thread every couple weeks.

So what is going on with this, was the silencing of the law all bogus?

I have had experience on the weird plate violation( also blocking the Spirit of America) while getting my moms car inspected. They made me take the plate cover off because supposedly all writing on the plate must be exposed. I have never gotten harassed for my exhaust (knock on wood). My car is pretty modified and my exhaust is loud (JUN Bl). I cruise down 495 from Hudson to Milford every day... lucky?

do a search for avengerhed he has had recent success with exhaust ticket- but as for the plate just tell them it has passed inspection this way- you bought ur car with this on it and you have since removed it to abide by the law!

We [Americans] really need to change these laws so jackass cops don't have the opportunity to impose stupid fines for something so trivial. Unfortunately there are a number of corrupt, angry, jealous cops that were likely picked / abused as kids. I know there are great cops, but unfortunately there are too many bad ones.

Good luck in court.

or you can just buy a quiet exhaust and remove your license plate frame and not get hassled at all... just depends how much of a 'victim' you want to make yourself... realize that evos stick out like a sore thumb to troopers due to the mainstream rebirth/hassle of street racing (import)... so the more responsible you are, the less you will get hassled...

not saying that officers don't get excited and over do it at times, but i've found as i got older and stopped driving like a spastic and made my cars less obnoxious (quieter), the less i found myself getting pulled over for, "no reason, by punk cops that don't have anything better to do"

just my point oh twos from living in MA with an evo since '03

Quieter or not. He stated it is illegal to alter an exhaust.

my only problem is they don't uniformly enforce it! Look at all those chevys/fords/harleys w/ big loud *** fart cans. they never get pulled over! why because they're the 'true' Americans?

....And I thank the member form MASS for providing a shed of sanity in an otherwise insane thread. OK, you're breaking the law, but the cops are the ones at fault for doing their jobs? Not likely.

Ok, just for reference I live in Illinois, and our laws are similar here. (No exahust mods that make it louder than stock or alter the stock appearence) I also am not a fanboy idiot that gravitated towards this site after Fast and the Furious 2 & 3.

I agree that driving like a civil person keeps you out of trouble. But dont think the cops arent at fault. You know how many laws there are that we break on a given day? Did you know oral sex is illegal in Indiana? Do you see the cops busting all the co-eds on the campus's of Indiana, Ball State, or Purdue? My point is some laws are rediculous and should only be enforced in extreme cases. The fact that a Harley or any F-body can run straight pipes but I might get a fix it ticket for my Evo with a JunBL exhaust is rediculous. People might be to blame for making themselves a target, but cops are equally to blame for focusing on nats-*** infractions.

The law actually states:

"No person shall modify or alter the exhaust system of a motor vehicle or motorcycle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the vehicle above the limits set forth in section b (see Maximum Sound Level)."

So ask what your decibel test resulted in for figures and argue the case from there. Wait.. they never measured the exhaust. Case closed.

And while I agree with the main point of your post, sometimes Officers are not afforded the luxury of chosing which laws to enforce and which ones not to. If the law is on the books, it is fair game to tag somebody for breaking said law. Possibly if people looked to the lawmakers (elected officials) to change obviously rediculous laws and not the folks hired to enforce their laws, we all might get along a bit better and not have so much animosity towards law enforcement. My $0.02.
