Hold on bro, let me get this right. Are you saying that I don't use my head to work on aircraft. I hate to tell you that working on something as complex as an aircraft takes a little brains to work on. Everytime I touch that aircraft, the pilots and aircrew are trusting me with their lives. I'm sorry but aircraft maintenance is a job with a ton of responsibility and I feel should get paid as such. That's what pisses me off - why is it O.K. for someone like Junior to get what he's worth but it's not O.K. for a military aircraft mechanic, sherrifs deputy, firefighter, or grade school teacher to get what they are worth. I don't buy that bulls^%$ your selling about the only people entitled to good money are the lucky few that succeed at "owning their own business". Personally, I don't want to do what Junior does and I definetly don't want to sit behind a desk all day. There are "blue collar" jobs out there that pay good money. People that do skilled jobs do actually make money which is why I'm getting out to become a Certified BMW Diagnostic Tech. My friend turned me onto this and he graduated from UTI and got picked up for the BMW STEP program. He had to do a one year apprenticeship where he earned 14 bucks and hour but after that he got hired as a full time Level 3 BMW Diagnostic Tech making 27 and hour. He's been doing this for the past 5 years and is now a Certified BMW Master Tech and pulls down 85 grand a year. I don't wish to be "white collar" and the only way I want my own business is if I could open a custom hot rod shop like Boyd Coddington or Chip Foose. I like my EVO but my true passion is for old school hot rods and muscle cars. The main reason I'm getting out the military is because I really don't enjoy what I do. I hate flying and the military rules and regulations are getting on my nerves after 8 years - I simply can't do it anymore for the pathetic paycheck I recieve after 8 years of service. It's time to go do something I enjoy and I can't wait for 2008.
Sorry bro, you are in the armed services. You do as your told when your told, or you are brought up on charges. Plus you asked for an honest answer. He is in the Private business sector and you are wondering why a U.S. Military job doesn't get as much? It should be obvious. Now I didn't say that the few LUCKY people should succeed, just the smart ones, ones who actually go out and do things on their own and not have to report to a structured environment where they follow orders. Basically your are a cog in a machine, one of many. The Gentleman who ones/started his own business basically taking all the risk, loans, and venture capital. Since it is they who not only work hard (No one is saying that you don't work hard, we all know this as fact as you being active within military service) but he works smart.
Basically you are asking why a government job doesn't pay as much as a private industry, that should be obvious as one is a money making industry and the other is simply a Government run nonprofit tax paid industry. The two aren't even in the same galaxy although hard work is brought into both. The Blue Collar workers that DO make money are those specialty techs or Niche craftsman (Jesse James for one). BMW is an excellent route to go as well, nothing wrong with that, but you simply cannot expect to make money on Government unless you are a Judge or Politician with corporate support and financing, but as a Military Mechanic, not a chance in hell.
Cliffs Notes: No one is stating that a US Military Mechanic is not hard working, simply not lucrative nor financially competitive in ANY market.
Hope your car holds out man, hell of a Christmas present if all goes well. I hope to be making this same trip next year from Philly, so keep us updated on her performance as I'm sure a lot of this forum has been watching.
