Rattling/Gurgling Issue on Brand New Evo MR.....

Well basically I want to know if this is normal or not. My car is under 500 miles. I noticed when backing into my garage the second day that when I hit the gas in gear or in neutral I have a gurgling/rattling sound coming from the left side of the car.

I am thinking it's tranny related, like a loose bolt or something, but not really sure. I know for sure its not injector tick or valve tick.

This is my first turbo car and I have no idea if thats even related, but it does sound odd to me.

When I rev it in neutral the gurgle sounds louder while the car is decreasing after a blip of the throttle. And its not like a liquid type gurgle or anything. Kinda sounds like what a gear would sound like with little lubrication....hard to explain i guess. Maybe I just need to sit in someone elses car to determine the noise. I tried closing the front windows seperately to determine which side it was coming from, and it is louder when only my driver window is open.

The car drives fine and boosts fine, so that's what led me to believe its tranny related. Dont know if its like a loose shift linkage or something. I have noticed that the car doesn't really shift smoothly into second or third, but I thought that was just the tranny being stiff during break in. Didn't really think much about it, but the noise is starting to bother me. It's the only thing about the car that sounds abnormal.

Thanks in advance for any help, I hope I'm not just hearing things,it's pretty loud.

mine has done this since day one, and i have about 13K miles on my IX. i think its normal. and you only get that noise in neutral with the clutch out right? with the clutch in it wouldn't make that noise? well, for me its only when i have the clutch out i get that noise.
i just thought it had something to do with the intake, because it got louder when i put it in a k&n filter, but haven't really listened for it after i got an apex'i intake. and i never really thought of it much, but i would like to know if its normal also.

Every IX MR I've driven has this - including mine. It's a metallic rattle that you can potentially hear in gear, under accel or decel and in idle with the clutch pedal out.........gets louder as the fluids get up to operating temps right? I have never been able to hear it with the windows up and it's louder with the AC on.......

I have had two dealerships and the regional rep listen to mine - as it has made it since day one. All three have claimed it was normal undampened torsional noises being transmitted either by gear rattle or the clutch disk springs. The rep gave me copy of a TSB stating that the noise (at least under decel) is considered normal by Mitsu. I made sure that all three visits were documented in case there is an issue/

Whether it is normal or not - I still don't know. My car has done nothing but shift better as I've accumulated more miles on it. I have heard this noise in every IX I've driven. I've even heard it in cars where the owners swore they had no odd tranny noises...........I've had to point it out to them. The owner of the dealership where I bought my car and I sat in five (5) warmed up MRs and heard the noise in all of them.

A while back I had a buddy of mine who does tranny work on BMWs and Lotuses (Loti?) take a gander at it and he says its the exact same noise he hears when he puts lighter flywheels on cars and is gear noise due to torsional vibrations. He brought out a fully race prepped E46 with a lightened (11 pound) fly wheel and fired it up. After a spirited spin around the neighborhood, he pulled the car into the shop and let it idle in neutral - bingo - same damn noise.

If you're worried, have it looked at by the dealer before you mod anything and get it noted that the noise existed from the beginning.

It's a normal noise on the IX, if you're talking about that vacuum cleaner winding down with a paper clip in it noise. It's not that loud but I know what you're talking about. My VIII didn't make as much noise as my IX, which worried me at first because I had been in my VIII for almost two years and then I get a new IX with all these weird rattling noises.

I got over it as I started getting into more IXs and heard the same thing. The VIII was a little bit quieter but it doesn't mean it was a Lexus or anything, it did squeal an squeak. It's a Mitsu, you'll get over it.

Hehe new car problematic. I was like this when I bought my first new car. Tell ya what....I'll trade you my 03 evo with 49K miles on it. You can drive it any way you want to and I'll baby your new ride and treat her as one of my own hehe. Can't wait to get my MR unless I can hold off til the X which I doubt I can wait

Funny that you mention it. My buddy has an 06 MR and always claimed he had no tranny noises. When I drove his car - I pointed out to him that he does - I put the clutch in, out, in and out to show him the difference and he claims he still can't hear it.
