How to Trade a Car?

If I was to Trade my car straight up for another what whould i have to do?
Is there Taxes involved?
What else would i have to know?

both cars are worth about the same

yes you pay taxes but only for the price difference.

It doesn't matter if it's dealer or private. If there is a price difference you have to pay sales tax. If you both have titles, you could put $1.00 as the sale price to avoid paying sales tax.

Yea you would have to pay taxes on the difference. Make sure the car is indeed the other parts car....ie not stolen or in someone elses name. Also make sure that the other party has the title for the car and that it is clean. If they do not have the title for the car, find out why. Is there a lein on it or worse two liens on it? If this is the case how are they going to pay off the lien to get you the title. Do not do the trade until they have the title. Is the title in their name? If not you should be doing the trade with the real owner of the car, even if it is their wife. Also make sure that you do a bill of sale, a real bill of sale not something you write down on a napkin, you can get on from your DMV.
