Question Best way to launch a Evo

Is the Evo tricky to launch from a stop? I know you can't just drop the clutch without screwing the tranny up. I was just curious if the Evo uses the same launch technique as the WRX?

i launch perfectly from 5000RPM. I dont drop the clutch....i regulate the clutch as I feel the tranny making contact with the engine then I let go and floor the gas. Last night's run yielded a 4.81 0-60 time.

Coolguy, how hard is your technique on the clutch? Can you do it without burning?

For a very quick launch, slip the clutch at about 5000 RPM. Increase throttle as you let the clutch out to maintain the RPMs right around 5000 RPM. It's a balancing act that needs to be maintained for about 1.5 seconds, and it should be stated that those 1.5 seconds are very hard on the clutch. But the car will leap off the line like a scalded tiger. Too bad you don't really get to enjoy the massive display of power and grip, because you're so intently concentrating on your tach and the balancing act you're performing with your feet.

My tequnique probably doesnt hurt the clutch. You have to do it very quickly....it's like a balancing act. The whole process is done in less than 1 or 2 seconds. If you drop the clutch it's bad for the tranny and you bog almost everytime. You have to modulate it......it's very hard to explain......it's a lot easier to show it. A picture is worth a thousand words....

Whether you call it "modulating" or "slipping" it adds up to the same thing: clutch wear. The clutch wears when it's in the process of being engaged/disengaged. If the pedal is all the way in, there's no wear. If the pedal is all the way out, there's no wear. It's in the middle that all clutch wear occurs.

If you're "modulating" the clutch when you start, that just means holding it somewhere in the middle, in the "wear zone". It's just like holding your car on a hill in first gear wears the clutch.

Obviously, everytime you shift, the clutch pedal is in the middle of IN and OUT. During a normal shift (not powershift), you're off the throttle, so the wear is minimal. When you're launching like this, you're ON the throttle, so the wear is considerable. Think of each launch like this as reducing the life of your clutch a couple of thousand miles (OK, maybe a couple of hundred, but it's A LOT more than every day lift-throttle gear changes).

Look on the bright side: the sooner you burn out the stock clutch, the sooner you can replace it with something a little beefier!

The clutch is a wear item. Any use of it will cause wear and even applying power with full engagement can cause wear. Clutches have limited holding power and with enough power applied it will slip regardless. Clutches are like brakes.....they wear and will eventually need to be replaced.

I personally just drop the clutch at 5000-6000rpm and got 2 different 1.8X 60' times when I went to the dragstrip.

Then when you are done burning the disc and pressure plate to hell and have to get a new one you'll think twice about launching the car.

Talking hmmm

well, its been a few hundred miles since the recommended break in period ended for me...

i thought to myself.. why not give it a try. 5k rpm clutch slip technique, as coolguy949 described.

i am still smiling. i cant believe how this car gets off the line. it's like nothing ive ever felt before.

i know the consequences of such launches, so i def wont be doing one at every stoplight (got a nice smell/taste of the clutch as i was scooting away).. once in a blue moon. ill choose my competition wisely (sorry civics i wont waste my time)

i didnt test the 0-60 this time, i will next time....

mucho fun. first launching experience in EVO very very good

Are twin-plate replacement clutches such as Exedy's significantly more tolerant of slip-clutch launches?
