Evo heat

hey guys, Basically i need some help my Heat in the car isnt working. i recently built the motor from top to bottom and dont know if that has caused this problem. other thing is i was also a victim of the good old Frozen heat controll knob and like 2 months out of "warranty" well one of the day i went to turn it didnt put any pressure what so ever on it and it turned fine.

so im thinking possibly it is broken in the back and now thats why it turns fine? and maybe its not getting to the hott side and im not getting heat? when its turned to full hot i get basically the middle setting inbetween cold and hot where the knob was stuck.

other then that im not sure what i should check or look at to try and track it down with all the snow here its getting really old to not have heat!.

Thanks
Rich

You aren't going to like this. You should have had this repaired when the car was in warranty (I didn't to it either). Anyway, the knob is broken - there is a repair kit. The reason the knob breaks is a bad mixer door - there is a repair kit. To install the door the dash has to come off and the heater box pulled - lots of fun.

Is this a recall type problem? Will the dealer repair this without it being broke (yet)? Does it affect all years? I would like to know more about this.

This is TSB-05-55-003 issued December 2005. It says.....

If customer complains that the heater temperature dial is difficult to turn:
Install new, improved heater blend door

For 2002-2003 models only, if the vehicle has not already had the heater air blend link and lever replaced as described in TSB-04-55-003, replace the heater air blend link and lever.

.....install a filter to the top of the blower motor housing

A filter is nice but I don't see a need for it if the door is admittedly bad.

Affected vehicles are the 2002 Lancer and Lancer Evolution and the 2003 Outlander

Obviously this is wrong since my '03 has this problem. When I returned to a dealership to look at a 2004 I found the knob turned just fine. A TSB is not necessarily a warranty issue, just instructions concerning known issues for the service people. I suppose if the knob was broken and the warranty was still in effect you could get it fixed under warranty.

BTW, the time allowance for replacing the blend door on the Evo is 3.6 hours. Remembering you have to remove the dash and recharge the AC when done, 3.6 hours seems a little skimpy.

Thanks. I have an 05 Evo. But my old 03 Lancer OZ had the knob problem. I had it fixed once, but it happened again. They told me they had to replace the heater door. I thought they were just bs ing me. It was out of warranty.

There's two doors in the heater box. One controls where the air goes, defrosters, floor or somewhere in between. The other door controls which core is uncovered, A/C or heater. The knob that sticks or breaks controls the second door.

so its very possible that since the nob was really stuck then all the sudden worked that it broke in the back and the door is stuck to the cold position and wont go hot thats what i was looking for now to tear the dash out lol

Under the heater controls are two levers that move cables. My guess is you will find the one connected to the temperature knob isn't moving when you turn the knob.

Well, I've got to do this too. That is why I have a copies of the TSB's. So, I haven't been into the dash yet either. I figure it doesn't matter how many instructions you have in hand, if you haven't done the job you really don't know.

Anyway, it seems to me that if the knob end of the cable is broken you should still be able to move the cable and get heat. I'm not sure about if the problem is at the heater box end.

Other than that, go to the dealer and get get copies of the TSB's I mention above and then either take them to the parts window and order the parts or buy them online from your favorite internet discount dealer.

Do a search on this site for people who have removed the dash. There are some pictures here that should give you some idea as to the mess you are getting into.
