Third Gear Grind.....Are Evo's Junk??
I had the same problem. i picked up my car with 5 mi and I had 2nd-3rd grind issues. I used the granny shift method and the problem got alot better (not great). 2nd gear still grinds sometimes and it's really frustrating.
I traded in a VW R32 for the Evo and I really miss the crisp, problem free shifting tranny of the VW. This is the Evo's biggest downside in my opinion.
I would try shifting slowly and avoid fast upshifts for the first thousand miles. If problem persists, go to the dealer. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

im with you on this one as well , i bought my car from the same dealership as you
evos are not junk but the transmissions are definatly junk. they always grind and get fu*ed up in like less than 30k miles even if you dont race or drive too hard.
the large number of evos with trannie problems just makes me sick.

well I guess my luck ran out. . today whenever I shift into third gear it grinds really bad, whether I shift fast or slow at any rpm. I guess that means my syncro is shot huh
The weird thing is, is that I never felt anything today but the grinding is really bad! And my car isnt under warrenty
any advice on what to do?

and see if you can get them replaced. Good luck
Update: Just to let eveyone know who has an Evo IX with 5spd.... I had my 3rd gear replaced along with new 3rd gear synchros, and it still ginds lightly. Every shift into 3rd from 2nd grinds lightly unless I'm punching it and accelerating fast. I don't think this is a problem you can have fixed, as it's done it from day one, and now still does it after a new gear and synchro. I believe Mitsu has a design flaw in the tranny and I guess we have to deal with it. Just to make sure this was normal, I test drove another brand new Evo IX off the lot with 9 miles on it and it did the same thing shifting into 3rd from 2nd....so oh well. Let me know if anyone else learns something new....
Chaulk up another IX with bad 3rd gear grinding. I have 5600 miles on my IX and it started grinding yesterday worse than my old VIII ever did. And the tranny on that was rebuilt 4 times!!!!
What's worse is that I stopped by a Mitsu dealership today and started talking to them about it and they told me the Regional Rep. is now denying any warranty claims for synchros no matter the mileage. I havn't called corporate yet to verify if this is true or not, but I called another dealership and they said they would definitely take care of it.

Wow which dealership? Sounds like they just don't want to lose any money. My 3rd grinds too at 2k miles. My 89 civic shifts 100x smoother than my Evo.
Lucky that I stumbled upon this thread, as the 3rd in my IX MR is noticeably more notchy/loud than any other gear. It's strange, about 50% of the time from 2-3 I hear a faint clunking (the thought has crossed my mind that it might be a faint grind, but as I can't even tell because it's pretty quiet, I'm guessing it isn't grinding) and 50% of the time I don't. I don't notice any notchiness when shifting hard (which I don't do very often), only when cruising at low revs. I'm considering bringing it in for warranty but I figure it isn't noticeable enough for them to admit anything is wrong. It's good to know I'm not alone here, anyway.
thanks for your help man I really appreciate it! I have an appointment next thursday at Mits. for my synchro's. I'll let you guys know how it turns out
