Third Gear Grind.....Are Evo's Junk??
Do NOT use syncromesh if you track your car. Research a bit on here, the fluid is too thin to protect (read 'cushion') the gears at the high temps seen on the track. Look at your owners manual and the ratng on syncromesh, it falls out of the recommended viscos. index.
Im not saying Syncromesh doesnt improve shift feel and smoothness, because compared to the stock fluid it does. Im just saying be aware there are trade offs...

Well you said you drive your car hard, I just assume you did it legaly on a track. I guess I should have assumed otherwise....
And in my mind, if it protects better on the track, it does the same on the street. Everyone is free to do what they please, Ill use OEM fluid thanks...

66k and i have 3rd and 5th grindage unless i granny shift. i bought mine from a private seller so i dont know how he treated it, but i also drive really easy until it warms up. anyone think i have a chance getting synchros from the dealership?
Grinding 3rd is different than feeling the notchiness of the 3rd gear.
On very cold morning my IX SE's shift into 3rd used to be notchy. After about 3,000 miles it's pretty much gone away. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're getting a very audible grind (similar or exactly like missing a shift or trying to shift into gear at speed without the clutch) or clunk.
Anything other than that seems to be the notchiness of the Evo transmission.

I've tracked my car numerous times with synchromesh. No problems. I drive it hard on the street, no problems. Oem fluid sucks. SHEPERD recommends synchromesh-nuff said. This silly theory of the fluid being too thin to protect anything is BS. I know countless numbers of people who use synchromesh at the race track and on the street and they never have any problems. People with 6 speeds have overheating problems regardless, the 5 speeds will be fine with synchromesh.
OEM fluid sucks, eh? The silly theory? Man, I forgot, you know it all. Just like how you know the Evo X was designed by DCX.
I also believe Shep recommends Syncromesh for his REBUILT transmissions, but hey I could be wrong. Tell you what, you continue with syncromesh, I continue with the "sucky" OEM fluid. We shall see who needs a rebuild first.
Edit:
Heres one such syncromesh debate thread. It seems that there is no clear cut solution. I guess this debate will rage on. Ill still stand by OEM.

What does the Evo X and DCX have to do with tranny fluid? I've been building DSM's for 6 years and have always used synchromesh without any issues (for AutoX, drag racing, and track use) and never once did I have an overheating problem in any my transmissions (or any grinding issues). My Evo and DSM trannies have been put through hell, and yet still have no grinds. The OEM fluid is definitely good, but its too thick for good performance on startup, and in colder climates. Happy crunch shifting with your oem fluid
Wow....

Shep and TRE both say Syncromesh. If OEM works for Tristar than go with it. I'll use Syncromesh always. I actually think that the Syncromesh shifts nicer than the BG II but that was in another EVO I drove. Mine only sees Syncromesh
GL to all but Im going off my expierience with a tranny with 67k on it and still shifting smooth for my DD.

Yup... its official junk! Too many people are having problems with the evo tranny. For those who never had problems, consider urself lucky. My 2nd gear is notchy, and the other gears are semi notchy. The car only has 300 miles, but still... its a brand new car. People with new cars shouldn't have to deal with this. STI's are built solid and EVO's have little problems everywhere. But overall EVO's out perform the STI, thats why i bought an evo. Most topics in regards to the evo tranny have people complaining about it. This sucks!!!

Very good points and I too bought the Evo for the very same reason(s). I just wish the problems where cheap and easy to fix on the evo ie clutch and trans.
