This post is good for me to see. My wife thinks that I can't drive the car when my gears grind, and now I know why. Before I had my Evo I was driving a C6 Corvette. I was not a fan of how that car shifted, however I also owned an '04 STi and that car had a solid shift. If I'm looking to upgrade the shifter/tranny, what is the best for the Evo?

This is a croc of sh*t, my trans was beautiful from day one....... developed a 4th gear grind..... had it fixed, shifts beautifully again. There is no reason to drive around with a broken synchro. Granny shifting is not solving the problem, it just doesnt need the synchros during a deliberate and slow shift. Dude get that car in to someone and have the problem fixed. The Evo is a pleasure to drive and if what you say about not beating the car is true, then bring to a different dealership.....

2005 EVO VIII, 8k miles & 5th grinds.. waiting on the dealer to set up an appointment. Dealer asked me how I drive it, I said like the car I bought, an Evo! If I wanted to granny shift I'd buy a dump truck. The guy said fair enough!

Yep, that's basically what I told the service manager last night when I went on a test drive to show him the grind. There's no reason I need to baby third gear when there's obviously something wrong. Second, fourth, and fifth gear speed shift just fine...and the car's brand new!! I speed shifted third for him, which sounds like a small bomb's been dropped.....so he knows the clunk/grind I'm talking about. He said he'd look into any common issues with third and give me a call back today.

You're right, that might be an issue too. But most of these guys experience it since day one

Well. what's wrong with it? If it's just grinding, it doesn't mean it's broken. It's doing a damamge, but it's a long term damage, your tranny is just as strong

Mine has had a notchy 3rd since i got it but usually once the fluid warms up its pretty smooth. Never grinded though so I guess I got lucky.

I have over 40,000 on my tranny, and thats with ALOT of hard driving. Not a single grind, shifts like butter. USE SYNCHROMESH.

+3 on the "it's normal"

My 2006 IX SE has had the "grind" from 2nd-3rd since brand new at 4mi. It's not really a grind as much as it is more of a notchy "crunch" if you try to mesh the gears too quickly on the 2->3 upshift. Two other local Evo IX SE owners I know who each got their cars around the same time as me have the exact same issue.

I've adapted my shifting style to avoid it. And I've also noticed that the issue virtually vanishes once the transmission oil gets warmed up.

It's really a crap shoot, some evos get it some dont. I tried using amsoil MTG 75w-90 gl4 and it seemed like it helped it a bit. Other then that I would really ignore the problem or learn to shift around it. I had a bunch of misc. tranny parts replace trying to fix the problem and it didn't help too much.

Do NOT use syncromesh if you track your car. Research a bit on here, the fluid is too thin to protect (read 'cushion') the gears at the high temps seen on the track. Look at your owners manual and the ratng on syncromesh, it falls out of the recommended viscos. index.

Im not saying Syncromesh doesnt improve shift feel and smoothness, because compared to the stock fluid it does. Im just saying be aware there are trade offs...
