repair of slight fender chip
well the time has come 5 mos of ownership and i have a first chip on the driver side front fender. my clearbra wraps around and of course this happens about an inch behind where it stops. i had a silver VIII and it didnt show up so bad but on a red IX this stands out. matter of time i know, but the problem with this chip is that the paint is flaking around the edges so i have to get it taken care of so it wont get worse. how do you guys recommend touching it up??? ill get paint code and get some touchup from mitsu.
my dad said in the old muscle car days, they would tear a match out of a book, and tip the torn end into the paint. they would dab it on the chip only once. the next day, he would do it again and little by little it would fill. by doing it slowly like that you would avoid being able to notice it and it wouldnt come up above the surrounding paint and look crappy. any suggestions would help thanks.

I have that paint pen. Sadly, it leaves big blobs just like a brush. You can try Langka ("the Blob Remover;" google it and see), although that stuff just removes all the touch-up paint when I try it.
Or ... read these instructions here.

not a bad write up by the bimmer boys. to avoid the blobbing of paint i think ill prob dab the touchup pen on something else and then use the match tip or some other devide to fill it in. i think ill combine both methodologies from that write up. this way hopefully ill have the right color and ill try to avoid the blobbing from the tip of the pen. im gonna order up that one pen from paintscratch.com. appears the color code is P23 for the phoenix red, which the red IX is. ill give it an order tonight and see how it works when it gets here. thanks.
I bought that pen from the dealership a month after I got my car because of a rock chip. I also got the blob look when I was trying to fill the chip hole. I have other chips that need filling and will look at using the match tip method. As far as the color match it looks alright.
Ummmm no. Don't use a paint pen, or a freaking match book. You need to sand, spray primer, resand, spray basecoat, spray clearcoat and then polish. Keep in mind, the paint you will buy won't match 100%, so you will have to blend the new paint with exist surrounding paint. If you don't know how to paint, don't paint. Bring it to a body shop, or it will look like complete ***. TRUST ME.

yeah of course thats a great suggestion but im not doing all that for a small chip on the fender. thats the absolute best way to do it, but to do all that and spend all the money on a rock chip?? id go broke by the end of the year. this is just the first one and its noticable so i want to take care of it. ill probably have 5 more by the end of next month. thanks tho
Correctomundo. Now Mitsubishi calls it Rally Red on their web site, but when I bought mine it was called Phoenix Red, as you say, and as my OEM brochure says. Same thing. Both code P23. Good luck!

upate: so i went to mitsu and got the paint pen. i was apprehensive about using the pen itself to apply the paint, after all the posts about it blobbing up on the car. i noticed one edge of felt tip of the pen was very pointy and very sharp. i figure as long as i only touch that point to the chip theres no way it can glob up. i was right. i used only that area. the first application i only dabbed twice, where the paint was flaking on the edge of the chip. i wanted to fill that part in and stop it before it flaked off more paint or got bigger. i did a few more applications today, dabbing 1 or 2 times each. i have the white area filled in. its still noticably lower than the surround paint. so day by day ill fill it in little by little. it shouldnt look too bad when its done. color match looks good too.
