Paint chipping stealth IC :(
Sawp y'all. I got the stealth Perrin IC in all black but the paint is starting to chip off. Just little chips for now anyways. It kinda looks like I went on a road trip with some fat bugs that I can't get off everywhere but when you look up close it's just paint chipping lol! Anyways I was just wondering if I can just take all the black paint off and just make it look like the polished aluminum style IC. I know I can sand it down and then polish but what about inside the fins? And is there a shop that can do it for me that you guys would recommend? Thanks guys!
You can repaint the entire thing, tho I can't remember the specific paint you're suppose to use to keep the cooling properties.
My Perrin IC's paint chips too. I've already repainted it once. Going to have to do it again soon too.
I wonder if sand blasting it would work

But you wont be getting any paint off of the fins if the cooler was powder coated.
You can polish the tanks and tubes(core), but you can't do much with the fins. If the cooler was painted black before, you're best bet is to repaint it. Grab some 400-800 grit sand paper, go over it lightly, and respray.

not sure if this was a bad idea on my part, but i once had a stealthy IC as well, and like the rest of you while driving around it started to look like ***.
i stripped the whole thing using aircraft remover, basically acid in a can. i did it on a hot day, sprayed the whole thing down with the aircraft remover, let it sit for like 30 minutes, sprayed it off with the hose. came out looking new. not stealthy anymore, but it looked a million times better than the speckled black one...
aircraft remover can be had at your local schucks/o'riellys should you choose to go this route.

^ agree with lemon head...... and goes with my theory of a hot tank or dip in a remover.
Dont see any other way to do it cleanly. Except of course the "time attack rim repair kit"

+1 to what most everyone else said. You will never remove the paint cleanly without dipping, and that would be a waste of time and effort. It would probably be cheaper to buy a new core, and sell your current one.
I'd just repaint it. Cost you 15 bucks max.

I have a anodized Full-Race vertical intercooler and the anodizing is fading. The difference between the darker areas and the lighter/faded areas is significant.
I contacted Full-Race about the problem and they were very professional in letting me know that there was little they could do for me.

thanks for all the input guys. Lemon head do you have any pics of your fine craftsmanship! As long as it does t hurt the IC itself then I wouldn't mind doing that. But I just don't want the fins to stay black and look retarded! I like the Perrin ic and I don't wanna hassle selling and rebuying.
I wondered this myself actually. The name is rather odd.
I might have some pics, i'd have to check. I have used this same thing on more than just the IC. I stripped many valve covers as well. this stuff is seriously like acid. get it on your skin, it burns. but, it removed paint/powdercoat very well.
They key is to do it on a hot day, you might have to use 2 cans but it should take all the black off. you might call the local shop and see what they'd charge to tank it. the 2 cans would run you prolly 25 bucks. it would take you a few hours, and you would have to wait for a hotter day.
