Weird noise, possibly clutch...please help.

So, just some quick background. I have an ACT clutch with approximately 50,000 miles on it. One hard launch about 45,000 miles ago. When the clutch was new, the pressure plate was grabbier than stock (duh) and chattered slightly. Went away after break-in.

Fast-forward to now. CLutch pedal engagement seems high (not a lot of room between the clutch engaging and reaching the highest point of clutch pedal travel). It has recently been studdering as I release the clutch pedal and engage the clutch. Car does not move with clutch pedal released and car in neutral. DOn't know if clutch is slipping because I am in-between mods and running off the stock ECU untuned. I don't boost at all.

Car started making a noise today that seemed speed dependent, not rpm dependent. grind-grind-grind. Sound was intermittent and not constant (would start, then stop, then start). Pushed clutch in, noise is still there. Put car in neutral, noise still present. One of my thoughts is that the clutch is starting to go, and something isn't releasing properly with either the flywheel or clutch.

I drove around the block again this afternoon and couldn't replicate the noise. Quickly checked the boots to make sure they weren't leaking. Seemed fine. Checked to make sure the lug nuts were tight. They were. I guess it could be the brakes (haven't checked those yet). Any thoughts?

i would say could be brakes, but that wouldn't affect the clutch pedal. from the sound of the issues with the pedal and the engaging, it sounds like the clutch is having issues.

I had something similar at high speed mostly.
It turned out to be the transfer case. I let a moron take my car for a test drive and he popped the clutch, like he was driving a civic....GRRRR.

Anyway hope that helps.

No, I'm sorry. I have 55,000 miles on the Evo. I meant that I have 45,000 miles on the clutch post-launch (the one time I launched it). I guess what I experienced today and my clutch issues could be 2 separate issues. Is there any way to check the clutch without taking off the tranny?

Yes. RRE did the install. I was thinking TOB too, except it seemed speed dependent not rev dependent (still made the sound in neutral with clutch pedal depressed).

I am thinking I may need a new clutch, but how much would it suck if it wasn't the clutch and I paid for a new one + install?

before you buy a new one have the shop check it, yes they will probably charge you to check it, but it's better then buying a new clutch when you didn't need it.

I haven't been able to diagnose it as of yet. I've had other issues that needed to be tended to first with the car. When time permits, the tranny and TC are going to get a rebuild. I thought it might have been the same noise.

What bearing would that be on a clutch? I've heard of spun bearings on an engine but no such thing on a clutch. How do you spin the release bearing?
