Rear jack stand points...

Is it ok to use the "skid" plate area on the rear frame rail for jack stands? To clarify, the rear frame rail has these little metal skid plates bolted on. The metal around that area seems to be overlapped and reinforced. Did a search, and most suggest using the notched side lip for placing stands, but I did not have notched stands (so the metal lip wouldn't crush).

Yes, I've seen that and read it. However, my stands are wide and not notched. I could not place them under the pinch seam without crushing it. Instead, I placed the rear stands directly under those little skid plates which are bolted to the rear frame rails. I just wanted to clarify that that area is ok and strong enough to support the vehicle. I had the car up for about 4 hours earlier with the stands there, and didn't notice any crushing of the metal. Just wanted to make sure...

I really wouldn't gamble with my life. Especially if you can get 4 jack stands with the notches for 50 bucks.

Any other opinions? What are those skid like plates for anyway if they aren't a suitable support surface? The steel frame rail underneath them seem to be reinforced.

Can someone please show me where stands exist that have the notch? Ill buy 4 on the spot. Every one I have seen has notches that are too shallow and would crush the pinch.

I always jack the car up on the framerail, and place my jackstands there too. Never had a problem on my G35 coupe or Evo.

And watch it crack in half...

Use a modified hockey puck if you really need to lift at the pinch weld with a floor jack.

I use a frame rail... never used the pinch seam... works well, just use a rubber block otherwise you'll put dimples from the jack in the rail.

LOL, you know it! The hockey puck is really good advice and much lower profile then a 2X4.

I have also used 3/4" thick oak with the weld going against the grain but the hockey puck would acheive the same results and be better.

I dont know about some of you..but I wouldn't use a piece of wood.
I was doing this last weekend and the piece of wood cracked while I was under the car.
I almost sh*t my pants...but luckily I had jack stands underneath the car.

Not a very good idea.
