I think the STi is a good performer and might be a better daily driver based solely on low end grunt and creature comforts. That being said, i would keep my Evo 8 if i wanted to get and STi since the Evo is just raw fun and responds great to driver inputs.

Almost two years and no problem with my IX MR 6-spd.
I dont get it....when the Japanese driver have Zero complaint about their 6 speed tranny (hint* they have the 6 speed for many yrs ago) and the American drivers have so much bad stuff to say about it.

I think many 6-spd driver blow their tranny because of mis-shifts, consider the 6 spd is geared closer than the 5-spd, many people down shift on the wrong gear and it went grenade.

Is it normal for them to have a pretty loud differential/transmission?

Mine isn't that loud, but it has that little back and fourth motion sometimes when in a lower gear I believe that's how they all come.

Are you sure the whine noise are from the transmission.
I think you may mistaken for the engine noise...not tranny as you have mention.
