Whining from the clutch? Not death whine I don't think

So, putting the car into reverse and slowly backing out I get a helluva whine. I push the clutch all the way in and it stops, slowly let it out and give it some gas and it whines again. It'll do it every now and then when I take off in first when it's still cold, and sometimes when I'm holding it on a hill. It doesn't make a noise at all while in motion.

Any ideas? Or is it another great and random Evo sound?

Was hoping for the "random Evo noise" answer, looks like I have something to inspect now. The throwout bearing never once crossed my mind either.

how long have you had the car? how many miles? my evo 8 whines in 1st-3rd, cause of the transfer case. it's normal to have some noise somewhat, but if it is excessive or you can feel something wrong when driving, then it is a problem. if you are stock, TAKE IT TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THEM MESS WITH IT. it's a brand new car with a warranty. don't listen to the guys that have hella mods and get rejected for their claims cause they raced the car and broke something. a good dealer will help you out. and it costs nothing to have it inspected. if you can wait for the car, have them bring you out to the shop and show you what they find. mitsubishi seems like they are starting to take better care of their customers now that they are out of the red. do some dealer research in the area you're in. not every dealer is good, but if you can find one you can trust, it can be a very rewarding relationship for your car. i work at saturn (lol) as a tech and also have been a service advisor. even if the car is a little out of warranty, we will still get it covered for a good customer. just gotta get to know where you're taking it to. sorry for the long rant, i could go on and on.

I have this same problem at 11,000 miles. it whines when the car hasnt warmed up and is put into reverse. When the clutch is pressed it stops whining. there are no whining noises during normal driving; only when cold and in reverse. what is the diagnosis?

This is because most reverse gears are straight-cut rather than helical, so they will whine. Pretty much all manual cars do this.

Yeah. That's what makes shifting into reverse iffy sometimes.

Actually, the Evo has comparatively little whine in reverse. My dad's old car (Infiniti G20) had a HIDEOUS whine in reverse. Same with my friend's Civic.

Interesting fact: Lamborghini reverse gears are synchro'd...don't ask why...

i was just about to ask the same question. i finished installing my exedy stage 2 clutch last week and i noticed a slight whine when i reverse the car. it happens on and off and i was hoping it wasnt early signs of the death whine! im glad to hear that it's not.

If the whining stops when you press the clutch in, but the car is still rolling in gear, then obviously it is not the gear making the noise.

+1 for TOB

^Good to know.Ive been wondering if my T-case was going bad as well.My car does make a bit of noise while the car is accelerating and while crusing at about 80 mph on the freeway but goes away as soon as the clutch is pressed in.Looks like Ill be saving up money for a new clutch and TOB.
