Is my starter bad?

When I went to crank it today, you could hear it hitting the starter just once and the fuel pump turning on, but nothing engaged. I popped the clutch, went home, shut the car off and then tried to start it again and it started right up...

On the way home the battery light and brake light were on, which I thought was weird, but once I got home they went off?

Battery is only a month old, Buschur mini, sits at 12.4 with the car off, and rests at 14.4 with the car on...

I am thinking it is the starter.

I am thinking alternator............ (Battery/brake light on). Maybe something with the Mini battery. Put a Miata battery in there, is smaller, and works better then the mini battery IMO. That should solve/help out.

I was thinking alternator, but then the voltage is at 14.4 when the car is running and stays there. So if the alternator was bad, then the voltage would eventually drop as it is not charging the battery.

The battery and brake light, I dont knoware they normal when you pop the clutch?

Ok, I think it is the starter as I just went to start it and it did the exact same thing but the voltage stayed right at 12.2 while it tried to crank.

I had the same thing with the buschur battery. Thought it was a starter, then the alternater. My battery had charge also but went down at start up. Tried to jump start it also. I called mistu and they said they never herd of a starter going around my area for an evo. So I bought a Braile battery and my car started with no problem! Braile.com is the website and come with a 2 year warrenty if anyone is interested! Good luck but I think it could be a battery since Buschur is known for things like this..............

Well I just got back from autozone and the started checked out ok. He said you cant test it once it has load on it on there machgine, so once the flywheel is engaged it may not function then.

Even if the car was connected to another battery (jump starting), and I had a bad battery, it still wouldnt start?

Voltage stayed at 14+ volts while it was hitting the starter...

Get a $50 NEW miata battery, and see if that fixes it. Can't explain why, but it is the battery, messing with the alternator. Change battery, and problemo el goneo! LOL. You owe us all a Starbucks.

haha, I doubt the miata battery will work with the buschur battery tray. I am going to work to get my multimeter and check to make sure the starter has good power at the wires, and then go from there I guess

This is the battery I will be going with if it is bad.
