Sure, it's possible, but why in the world would you want to do something like that? That would require looking both down and to the side to be aware of shift points...if you're already looking down, why not just look at the tach?

this may not be the answer youre lookin for BUT i have the G-TECH pro meter mounted on the windshield next to the mirror and it has built in adjustable shift lights that work awesome. I actually use the meter now just for that purpose.

YES, you can do it, YES it is easy, YES you can see a bright yellow LED without looking down.
There are a least 2 blanks behind the lancer face where bulbs are not used on the US model.
I have had a LED there for some time and have used it on the track during the day without looking down at the tac.
If you want I can snap a picture and post it tomorrow.
