Factory HID vs aftermarket kits...
Just wondering which one looks better, i own a gsr and am thinking about upgrading to hid's and someone has them for sale so not sure if i wanna by his for a XXX or by after market... I was thinking purpleish blue 12000k or factory look.... I know u loose visibility on 1200k but its really not that big of an issue for me which ones look better... thanks

No comment. People go with HID for improving night time vision with the extra light out put. If you're going to get a 12000K bulb then it's just looks that you're after so it's kind of pointless to get HID.
But if it's just looks that you're after, then just get some cheap ebay HID kit for $100 or something.

I believe you start losing 'candle power' or the volume of light after 5000k. Most stock HID's are between 4000k-4500k. So 12000k would just offend a lot of people's eye while not adding brightness. The color really depends on the company that produced them, but 8000k is pretty much light blue at any angle and 12000k is purple at any angle. 6000k-6500k seem to have the best look imo, very bright white with hint of blue or purple at some angles. You can't really notice any loss in brightness over 5000k either.

wrong.
12000K will be a deep blue/purple and possibly even crossing to red.
colours vary between manufacturers when it comes to the kelvin rating but i can tell you now that 12000K is absolutely rubbish for any sort of vision and will produce a very, very dim light output.
light output (otherwise known as luminescence) is inversely proportional to the temperature rating of a HID globe i.e. the higher kelvin rated the globe, the less bright the light will produce.
riceball is on the money when he said that standard issue HIDs on most european cars are 4300K.
i had 6000K mcculloch globes on my supra and they were a little too blue for my liking.
IMO, go for something around the 5000K mark.

if you want looks, just get a cheap ebay kit with 12k bulbs. the oem hids are meant for better visibility. they dont look as "cool", that is subject to opinion.
i personal like 4k to 5k bulbs and dislike anything higher.

Define that statement.
The first thing people will assume is looks, but in my opinion as far as output and cutoff, you can't beat an OEM HID projector that was made for hid, compared to a halogen projector with a HID "kit". Somewhere on here, someone had a side by side of an oem hid evo set up vs a aftermarket kit. The cutoff of the OEM setup, as well as the spread looked MUCH better than some aftermarket "kit".
As for color, others have touched on it, but all OEM HID setups run between 4100k-4300k philips or osram bulbs. If you read differently, someone is talking out of their ***. ANY color temp over that, and you are losing output/lumens. There is no questioning this.
I've worked on retrofitting OEM HID projector setups in many different cars.
