Secret i dont know if you keep track of the DMS site?but the day after the evo8 petition was put up,they reposted the evo 8 petition.well that was suppose to be the evo 7`s petition,wich the DOT messed up and posted the wrong petition.So colman Sachs what he did is ,he took off the reposted evo8 petition off the site and he said the count down for the comment period on the evo7 starts as of july 1.were allready 22 days into it.

Has anyone determined if any of those cars are "Street Registered" and not legalized?? Here in new york, you can register a specialty car (usually a kit) and its fairly easy if you can prove ownership (Certificate of origin) to get a title.. However, it doesnt mean it is legal or federalized, usually what it means is that you may get into trouble if the car is impounded for any reason (Accident, etc..) I was doing this research about a year ago to import a Holden Monaro (the new Pontiac GTO).. the biggest issue is resale.. Although you may be able to street register a imported car, it may not be as easy for the new owner.

 

I don't know much about the conversion, but... wouldn't it be cheaper and less time consuming to just by the U.S. spec Evo VIII and mod it untill it's as good or better than the JDM?

 

at the time when i bought the E7 ,there was no talks from mitsubishi about even bringing the EVO to the US.it would had been easyer and cheaper to get a US evo.but at the time i wanted to be different and get a car that u wont really see everyday

 

I am not sure if the evo would be different but I have a RHD Civic Type-R That I got registered it wasnt all that difficult. It was imported when I got it but It wasnt registered. I am sure it is possible to register a jdm evo but it has alot to do with the state you live in and also the DMV you go to.

 

? why is everyone so hung up on the jdm evo, no one hear in the states will service them,and if you do find someone who will you'll pay out the *** for it.If there is an warrenty issue in japan, you're screwed cause it won't be coverd in the stated, and other than SLIGHT diferences there is not diference between the jdm and U.S. version.It is not worth it not to mention they will rate it 02 and below as a modified mirage which means you won't get **** for it, if it is totaled.

 

There is only one docket related to a Mitsubishi Evolution currently open. It is Docket No. NHTSA–2003–15470 and is a "Petition for Decision That Nonconforming 2003 Mitsubishi Evolution VIII, Left Hand Drive Passenger Cars Are Eligible for Importation." The closing date for comments on this petition is July 30, 2003. However, the Federal Register notice of receipt of this petition also states:Currently, any Mitsubishi Evolution registered in the US that was imported into the US by any entity other than Mitsubishi Motor Sales America is illegally registered.

 

Any results as of yet?

 

i maybe stupid for posting this but, how about get the evo5 ship it down here buy a mirage and switch the vin#'s and strip down the mirage bare and get rid of it.

 

Celm. That may be what the forums are saying. But I don;t know, to be honest. I more or less just hang out here and on the classic Mini sites. Those Mini sites happen to be where I got my info regarding car importation.

But the truth is in the federal register daily paper. If there was a mistake, it would have been noted in a later edition of the Federal Register. Thats the way the Fed Govt works....whether it be car importation rulings or the approval of use for new prescrition medications (my expertise).

The federal register states that the docket in play currently is for the Evo VIII....and the linked docket itself contains Evo VIII info only. That docket is nearing the end of it's comment period.

I have a feeling that the Registered Importer is taking a slightly different strategy for the Evo VII's (then they are currently telling the public)....in that they are going for the Evo VIII federalization first. After all, there is already a Federally approved version of this car on the market here in the US. Then once they get approval, they likely plan on extrapolating the approval for the Evo VIII back to the previous model of the same car.....ie Evo VIII is identical to the Evo VII in all ways except a, b, and c.... Thats a pure guess though.

But as the paperwork stands now, it's the Evo VIII that is being discussed on the Federal level and not the VII.
