Looking 2 Purchase - Clutch needs 2B replaced

Hey guys, I might be purchasing a new EVO '03 with 33K Miles on her, from a guy named Ken S. Guy only drove the car for 2K miles and was in a divorce and needs to sell it.

Only issue is the clutch. I haven't test driven it yet, but he says it's slipping in 5th Gear.

- Should I stay clear of this car, or purchase this bad boy for $20K and have the clutch replaced?

- Who in Denver or surrounding area does clutch replacements? How much will it cost?

- Do you have any phone numbers I can call and get a quote?

- Any suggestions on the Clutch Kit I should go with. Car is used mainly as a DD.

- Would you recommend a new flywheel replacement at the same time?

- Ran across this Clutch for sale on Craigslist, any idea if it would fit an '03 EVO? EXEDY HD TWIN PLATE CLUTCH FOR MITSUBISHI EVOLUTION

- anyone go to RX Motorsports for work on their EVO?

Thanks guys, any help would be appreciated.

- Steve

I recommend the exedy and it is very popular. I would personally test drive it. Also look to make sure the pedal just doesnt need to be adjusted. When i bought mine (used) the clutch grabbed very high and slipped on a power shift. I adjusted it to activate lower and i havent had any problems.

never buy a used clutch first off, dont be cheap....

your probably looking at about $900- $1300 for just the installation depending on where you take it

always replace or resurface the flywheel when you replace the clutch.

Thanks for the advice guys, I appreciate it.

What do you guys think would be a reasonable price to offer this guy?

- '03 EVO
- 33K Miles
- Clutch needs to be replaced

Kelly Blue book list this car in fair condition at $19,900

Thanks,

- Steve

hows the rest of the car? If the clutch is already gone i would assume it has seen some abuse.

Yeah, I haven't test driven it yet. But I'd imagine it's had it's fair share of launches. Then again the guy who owned it before says it was owned by an older man who was starting a family and needed it gone for financial reasons. Maybe he just road the clutch too much. Either way I'd rather have a slippin clutch vs a f'd up drive train...

Look into Exedy or ACT HDSS if it's been through a fair share of launches you should have the rest of the tranny checked out...

I really know nothing about the car, except that it's for sale, has a few aftermarket parts in it. Intake and Catback, but that's it.

I know the EVO's have issues with the Clutch but what should I be listening for when I take this one out for a test drive tonight?

Also, is it really that un common that a clutch is worn out after just 33K Miles. I thought this was pretty common?

Thanks

I would not go more than 17k with a slipping clutch. $20k would be for a perfect 2003 EVO.

Its not uncommon for a clutch to go out at 33k or less with just regular driving with a few Mtn. runs or a track day. With that low of mileage on an 03' I think it'd be safe. Id offer him what hes asking minus the cost of clutch and labor (Cost me 1200). Does the car have anything done to it?

Great, thanks for the info. How about the Tranny on these '03 EVO's. Are they able to last, or is this something that's gonna need to be replaced somewhere down the line cause they just weren't built to last?

Note: I'm not looking to increase my boost at all with this car, maybe just a conservative re-map.

Test drove the EVO tonight and all I can say was that it was f-ing amazing. This car must have been pulling well in the mid 350's. The clutch would give out around 5000 rpms and above in 3rd and 4th gears. Doesn't appear to be a huge deal. Car's got a whole new I/C piping setup. Apexi Turbo Timer and SAFC. HKS intake and catback. Tein ??? coilovers, and that's about it I think.

I'm almost surely going to pick this one up. almost a month a searching and I finally found the one I'm gonna be very happy with.

Anyone have an idea what car insurance would be? I'm 28 I don't have anything on my record. Still I'm guessing it's gonna be $150 or more a month. Ouch....

I'm sure the seller would be absolutely tickled that you posted his full name then followed it up with news of his divorce. G-duh dude.
