Re-Clearing wing

Hi all, Me and my dad are planning on reclearing my fading and peeling wing. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with which clear is the best to use?

and any tips on wing removal (the write up on here has dead pic links)

My dad worked in a body shop for a while in the 80's and he said I needed a certain type of clear poly something I can't remember.

Thanks

get a 10mm deep socket to take the wing off.

For the clear, I've heard DuPont Acrylic Clear (A-7480S) with DuPont ChromaSystem Blender (A-19301S) works well. I think u can do without the blender, though. Both can be found at www.paintworldinc.com

There's been a detailed write-up on this though... SEARCH!

Wing removal:
  • Open trunk lid
  • Look underneath and unscrew by hand both rubber bumpers (one on each side)
  • Pull off by hand both black pastic screw caps (one on each side)
  • Remove one 10mm screw under the hole where each bumper was, with deep socket--don't drop it inside trunk lid frame!
  • Remove one 10 mm nut on each stud where each plastic cap was
  • Close trunk lid
  • Heat up bottom of each side pillar of wing with hair dryer
  • Put a towel on the trunk lid to protect it
  • With one person on each side (I did it alone) pull both wing pillars up simultaneously, firmly but carefully, rocking them from front to back slightly--you will be unsticking some double-sided tape and pulling a plastic plug out simultaneously on each side, so it's a bit tricky

I did mine last October and I had to take it completely down to the carbon fiber. I tried using a regular DuPont clear coat with an adhesion promotor (after I even scuffed the c.f. surface slightly to try and get it to adhere, couldn't see the scuffs afterwards) but it didn't really last long. It's starting to chip up again now (was fine but I think a stone or a piece of salt hit it and chipped it) and gets worse every time it snows or rains where I live because of the water getting under it and freezing/thawing. Good luck fixing it though, let me know what worked best for you so I can redo mine lol.

Why would you use adhesion promoter on anything but plastic? final sand with something like p600 it should be fine.

I know you don't want clear in a can. I am against almost everything in a can for a car application.

I haven't ever sprayed dupont but i like d894 of the global line. It is made by ppg it is the one called "High solids clear"

http://www.pwpaints.com/ppg-p-sheets.html

You can probably find it on ebay but the p-sheets are right there check it out.

I found the right up here for anyone else who is having this problem late... I still have under 50k on my 03 so I'm a little late to the fading .

Some people has used dental floss to help unstick the double sided tape. I cut the end off of an old toothbrush at a sharp angle to help remove the tape. I had not considered heat, but that should help.
