I have been working on cars as far back as I can remember. I like doing as much work as I can myself on all of my cars. More satisfaction knowing that I am keeping it runnning.

I did it without ever touching a tranny before, with floor jacks(sucks), so I guess add me to the list

Evo is my first car that I started to work on myself.
Never even touched engine parts before evo.
Now I do everything from oil change, pad change, installing mods.
Not ready for big stuff like clutch but willing to do it if someone teach me how.

Evo has been great car to work on from start.

LOL everyone who owns an Evo should be required to have a basic understanding of maint. and how the darn thing works! I do a lot of my own work but I am also not afraid to ask for help if I am doing something I have never done before or don't really know what I am doing. I have never been afraid to get dirty on my cars though.

I am a DSMer originally which automatically makes me a Mitsubishi Certified Technician because no other car can turn normal people into seasoned mechanics like a DSM. You start out with a simple oil and brake change and next thing you know time flies and you're frantically wiping the steam from the oil cover in the middle of January as you try to put your engine together in your driveway.
So yes, chalk me up as a grease monkey.

I started on a 95 GSX back in 98. Did a full 6 bolt swap(one of the first in the nation at the time). Had a 90 Talon. Did a JDM motor swap into it. Had a wrecked 92 GVR4. Plasma cut the front off and welded a new front frame onto it. That was all in about 3 years.

I tore down and rebuilt both the block and the head on a EJ22T closed deck Subaru motor which makes working on a 4G63 look like playing with lego's. I currently own a 90 GS eclipse turbo(the only year the GS came with a turbo, don't argue, it's factory), a 1992 GVR-4 379/1000 and my 2003 Evo.

I work on cars all day installing custom turbo kits and doing custom engine swaps into cars(See 350Z TT into a Miata, it'll be in a magazine when it's done, I'll post pictures.) When I get home at night, I have one of 5 cars which need attention. All of them are turbo charged, 3 are AWD, none of which have ever been to a dealer even if they had a warranty, and all of which I can strip to the frame if needed. I can also tune a Tec3 on a 600 hp TT 383 cobra if you need me to.

Does that qualify?

And define "Grease Monkey". If people say "I work on my car blah blah, but I'm not doing a clutch" or I do this but that's to hard, then I gotta call shenanigans and say negative. Man up, get the car off all four, get some help, get some beers and bust it out. I can do a timing belt on my GVR-4 or my Eclipse in less than an hour, start to finish. How do I do that? I've done it probably 75 times over the years. When I do the twin disk in my Evo, it might take me a full day, but whatever. No whining. I bet it doesn't take me half that the second time.

When I started out modding cars, everyone did everything on their cars. If you took it to a shop, we referred to it as "wallet tuning". Of course things have changed, but no one has laid hands on my car for anything.

AMEN! Preach on, preacher!

I started a similar thread as this, and it got alot of posts like that. Like "I'll change my spark plugs and oil, but if I have to swap a turbo or somthing, I'll take it to a shop." I've always believed that nobody is going to take the time and work on YOUR car as well as you will, granted you have the ambition to learn how to do it, and do it correctly.
