Car shuts off while driving

Well, you guys are my last hope, before shipping the EVO off to the dealer. I looked the car over, my mechanic tried to diognose the problem. Scanned it for codes, etc. Whats happening, is the car is losing power any time it feels like it. (it's not the battery or altenator-- ) It has no pattern or consistancy whatsoever. I can drive the car for 5 minutes, itll cut out. Or, itll be running fine for 2 weeks before cutting out. When the "cutting out" occurs, itll stay immobilized anywhere from 30seconds to a 1 1/2 days. When it loses power, I lose my dash guage cluster, my turbo timer, clock, brakes, sreering, etc. But, I get lights, door chime, and "door ajar icon" on dash. My EBC display will come on, and my remote (key-fob) works fine. I was informed that it might be a faulty key(has an anti-theft imobilizer in it). I used the factory spare key, thought it was it. ran fine for 2 weeks, but to my dismay, back to square one. If it was a loose wire or connection, it would only occur while in motion. but has imobilized itself even while sitting for 3 days. Hopefully someone has had this same problem, and can let me know exactly what it is. I thought I went over the whole car to the best of my ability. My mechanic looked at it also. cant find it. No CEL either.. Any ideas or tips would be greatly apprietiated. Thanks so much for any help!!

Check this out, there is a water leak issue. Take a look and see if that's the issue.

That sounds like it could be the issue. I dont know of anything else it could be beside maybe some bad grounds, but I dont think thats the case.

I was all underneath there, everything looks very clean, no corrosion, water, or anything of the sort. The troubling thing is that it cuts out and comes back on by itself. Whenever it wants to. Thanks so much for the idea, but dont thik its it

I dont know if this will help but one of my previous cars a friend of mine suggested that I leave the battery cable loose to make things easier next time we work on the car. (sliding it on/off)

Well I listened to him at the time but later on I would drive the car and every so often the car would just shut off while driving or standing still etc... I never figured out why it was doing it until one morning when I was going to school and the car wouldnt start and had no power. So thats when I realized that it is the battery! I grabbed a wrench and tightened down the battery cable and problem never repeated!

After that I always made sure that there is a clean and tight connection on the battery terminals.

If your leaving them loose or there is build up around the terminals I suggest cleaning and tightening them.

Hope this helps,

I actually sell batteries for a living, thats the first thig I checked. I have the pc680 in there now. everything is tight. The first time it happened, it was in the morning, went to start the car, and nothing. So, naturally, I thought it was the battery. So, I took another car to work, came home with intention of charging the battery, but It started right up. And did so for a week after that. Then it started cutting out while driving, etc. The alternator is charging @ 14.5 also, so its good too. I think the car is possesed. Anyone know a reputiable exorcist?!?

I'm not an expert myself but I'm guessing that it might be something that you installed that could be incorrect. Have you tuned your Evo after all those mods?? I sure hope you can get it figure out before you take it to them dealers man.

you might want to see whats up with the Flash in your ECU sounds like it might be an immobilizer program issue. Even if the car is running for a while and the key is somehow removed you engine will still shut down when it loses that signal causing a ignition system failure or it could be an ignition failure by itself but it sound like an issue between the immobilizer ECU or the Engine ECU. Just incase I would suggest bringing it to the dealer to read the DTC's from the car because the MUT III and tools like that are the only ones that can read and have a diag feature for these systems If it not that then I'm lost Good Luck -JOEYD

Hah! That happened to me too one time when I switched to having a mini battery to save some weight of course.

Well, apparently I didn't tied down the terminals as good as I thought and my car was trying to shut down on the road. The lights were dimming and going back to normal back and forth, the radio was turning on and off, and I believe the headlights used to turn on and off as well at night.

I tried to find out what was the problem all week and then when I stopped at a gas station to fill up my car, the alarm was going off and on by itself. I got really pissed at that moment and with my hand, I repeatedly hit the terminals and since that day I've had no electrical problem with my car. Although I did retighten the terminals a few weeks later just in case .

You are on the same track of thinking that I'm at right now, Joey. I have the Cobb AccessPort, and thought it was the immobilizer feature that was interfering with the functionality of the ECU. I uninstalled the Cobb, still cutting out, though. Also, when it "loses power", My profecbspec2, and my shiftlight/digi-tach do not lose power - which are wired direct to the ECU. Although my A/F ratio guage does lose power, which is not wired directly to the ECU... But, yeah. I keep thinking ignition, myself. The only thing I'm worried about is either the dealer not finding the problem, and still hand me a bill for $300.00, or they might just laugh in my face and say "we cant work on this thang - you modified it, its too much of a liability. We arent autherized to do so - blah, blah, blah" *My poor baby is hurting. She needs to get out and stretch her legs I was hoping someone had the same thing ailing their EVO, and would simply say "Oh, what you got there is a faulty relay on bank 2 of your blinker fluid sensor, duh"

My friend had a possessed convertible once. Left it outside in the rain with the top down once. Afterwards, all the windows would go up and down at random times. Did that for a long time.

I feel your problem is a wiring shortage/corrosion. Not too uncommon, but it is an expensive fix. Have a good tuner look at your ECU too and make sure you don't have anything "unusual" in there. If it were the immobilizer, why would the problem be so sporadic? G'luck and KEEP US POSTED.

I had same problem as you so don't feel so bad.
Mine would shut off occasionally and unexpectely while driving.
There was no pattern or consistency in this as you decribed.

Once the car shuts off, it would take anywhere between 1-2hours before being able to start it back up.

It was driving me crazy.

Later I found out, the fuel pump connection was bad and caused the issue.

If you recently had fuel pump installed, it could be due to an improper installation of the fuel pump. You will need an entire fuel pump assembly if this is the case.

After I replaced the fuel pump assembly, no problem whatsoever.
