When fueling, leave car on?
When fueling, leave car on?
Does it hurt anything when you go to gas the car up w/ the car on? The car spitters and sputs when you take off the cap (I assume b/c of the drop in fuel pressure). Does it hurt anything? I fuel up like this so the car doesn't have to sit and cool then fuel up.
You might get a check-engine light and need the dealer to reset it... I would rather wait for it to cool (besides you can clean the windows or make a phone call or something while you wait).

You can just as easily blow up if someone drives by you while your car is turned off and refueling. So I really don't want to hear anything about that. I know gas fumes and a spark don't mix, but it can happen even when your OWN car is off. There are other things that cause sparks you know.
I always follow these simple rules (which is a strict rules in my country anyway) :-
1) No Smoking - freakin obvious
2) Switch off the engine
3) Not using cell/mobile phones
These are standard rules in most countries in these part of the world and I'm sure it's easy to comply.
What i do usually is when i know i'm going for a fuel stop and i've been driving hard, i'll ease up a few km from the fuel station and dial up maybe 10 sec on my turbo timers (which is usually set to around 1 min - set to auto) to let the engine stop just before i re-fuel.
It's not too much to ask to do this but i still see many people disobey these simple procedures. What the hell, it's not my car if it blows up in their face.

next I guess you will have to coast into the gas station spray the car with water to cool everything off and have ground strips attached to the chassis to prevent build up of static electricity. Oh and don't talk on the cell phone while waitng or it could cause the car to blow up too. You will also have to push your car away when you are done fueling just in case someone next to you is fueling up. O.K. now that I'm done being an *******. I agree it probably isn't the smartest thing in the world but I don't think that it really significantly affects your chances of starting a fire. They fuel racecars in a lot more volatile situations and fires are rare.
if you want to die..go for it. dosent sound like a bright idea to me.
and i love how a guy tries to take you to court for him almost killing you. i love america!lol...gee, judge i was walking around with a gun and somone knocked it outta my hand, and now my hand hurts. so im gonna sue. SORRY OT.

If you'd like to look at it another way....why not just be polite like the rest of us and turn off your car when you go to refuel. 1st World countries have this law in effect because there really are people that don't think straight, I'd love to export them..but we all have to play nice.
Oh yeah and on your original question, the ECU monitors pressure in the fuel system to try and prevent some of those tasty carcinogen vapors from escaping. When you pop the cap (same as people not screwing on the cap all the way) you lose pressure and the ECU doesnt like it. Just remember to breath deeply while refueling your running vehicle...

I would say you would have less of a chance blowing up if you left the car on... think of someone's car back firing while trying to restart... think of someone driving by with worn breaks creating a spark... think of someone with a ****ty audio install that touches his car and gets popped with static... think of a million other things that are much more likely to occur than you blowing up from your car running. It's simple BS. Tell me something, fumes rise... they do not go into your engine bay... What exactly is bad about leaving your car on or do you people just like talking **** to someone? Are you people so ignorant to believe that the fumes of you fueling are going to go back down and under your hood for you to blow up? You might have had more of a case when pumps were designed differently 20 years ago but that was 20 years ago... I guess people in America love to live paranoid lives and will believe anything that will scare them... losers.

Bob Renkes of Petroleum Equipment Institute is working on a campaign to try and make people aware of fires as a result of "static electricity" at gas pumps. His
company has researched 150 cases of these fires. His results were very surprising:
1) Out of 150 cases, almost all of them were women.
2) Almost all cases involved the person getting back
in her vehicle while the nozzle was still pumping gas,
when finished and she went back to pull the nozzle out
the fire started, as a result of static.
3) Most had on rubber-soled shoes.
4) Most men don't get back in their vehicle until
completely finished. This is why they are seldom
involved in these types of fires.
5) Don't ever use cell phones when pumping gas
6) It is the vapors that come out of the gas that
cause the fire, when connected with static charges.
7) There were 29 fires where the vehicle was reentered
and the nozzle was touched during refueling from a
variety of makes and models. Some resulting in
extensive damage to the vehicle, to the station, and
to the customer.
8) Seventeen fires that occurred before, during or
immediately after the gas cap was removed and before
fueling began.
where do you see leaving your car on caused all the fires or infact any that they mentioned?
