Is over 80 healthy?
Any car, make, model or type, will last forever if you take care of it.
And I don't care if its a Hyundai or BMW.
Take care of it and it will last forever.
<<<< ***ORIGINAL*** Stock clutch going on 42k miles. I don't beat the **** out of my car. (Maybe once in a blue moon....)

If you get a good evo and take care of it there should be no problem going over 100k if the power level is reasonable. (up to 400hp) I have seen nearly stock evo's throw a rod cap under 20k miles and trash a motor and I've seen modded evo's with close to 100k on them still running great. It all depends on how good your tuner is, how well the factory put it together, and how you drive it and keep up with the maintenance. It all comes down to this......You can't buy another car for the same money that will do what this car will do when appropriately modded. It is reasonably reliable for the performance it offers.
In the end it all depends on the previous owner's driving, so take the car to a mechanic and check everything from the chassis all the way to the ecu, rattling sounds are normal in an evo and can be fixed but you dont want a bogging engine that would open its mouth for you to put money in it.
IMHO your car will perform how you treat it... if you do every maintenance on time and take care of it, the problems should be minimal... also depends on how hard you drive your car...
Most of you are missing something here.
Your mechanic friend is not totally wrong, a lot of mitsubishi cars before are not reliable as compare to TOYOTA, LEXUS.
But EVO is different. It was brought to US in 2003. Mitsubish engineers spend a lot of R&D in the development of Lancer Evolution. It's a refined WRC cars over the years, and it was built to take all the abuse in rally racing. The car itself has lots of strong parts to support its high hp engine, especially for a 4 cylinder. A lot of owner abuse the evos, result in premature wear and tear.
If the 80k evo is well maintained, it's not something you should worried about.

My buddy has a Mitsubishi P-something (early 90s econobox). It was running strong until it shat the 5th gear out on the freeway (at about 220K miles) because he ran it out of transmission fluid. I think he ended up putting a new tranny in (pick-n-pull type thing) and it's still running good.
huh? lol, i got 68k on mine, did clutch change when the car hit 46k, just because i went with bigger Turbo. No problems! go figure.
btw, as far evo? it is not a luxury car, i.e bmw.audi.benz.
It is AWD car, handles like gocart, it will make noises here and there. You have to make a decision what fits you the best.
