6 speed coming?

I know the JDM spec Evo has the 6 speed, and unfortunately the US doesnt get it for 2003. I was wondering if anyone has any news if the tranny is coming and if it worth swapping a JDM tranny with the current 5 speed?

This has been covered a few times, please use the search feature, it's not just a tranny swap, the 6 speed is tied to the ACD/AYC which means you'll have to change to the AYC/ACD ECU also.

The 5-speed gearing is perfect the way it is now. With the six-speed the first 4 gears are almost identical to the 5 speed and the sixth gear is just for economy.

With the 5-speed, if your in fifth and going any slower than 50mph your already bogging the engine. So why even bother with a sixth speed. IMO.

The 6 speed DOES NOT need ACD/AYC. The operation of such is independent of the tranny. Size is not an issue here as the 6 speed fits into the same space as the 5 speed W5M51 tranny. The ACD uses no more space than the viscous coupling. In the RS model, the ACD ecu is different and only actuates the acd as there is no ayc. It also has slighty different locking algorithms.

Here is something from the JDM brochure:
"Standard on the GSR, Evolution VIII uses a 6-speed close ratio gearbox to maximally utilize the extra torque
generated by the uprated 2-liter 16-valve DOHC inter-cooler turbocharged 4G63 powerplant. With the
motorsport competitor in mind, the RS comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard and is available with
6-speed gearbox and 17-inch wheels as factory-fitted options"

JDM RS = ACD only + factory option 6speed
JDM GSR = ACD + AYC + standard 6speed

p.s. I will try to post my ACD article this week (AYC focussed article to follow). Trust me when I say that it will be a must read.

It is my understanding that there will be no changes to the 2004 Evo's in the US.

In my understanding the JDM 6-speed has been recalled. Don't you people want the bugs to be worked out?

We were chatting about this over some food the other day. You guys/gals in the States have a great car in the usdm evo 8!
It has the proven 5-speed and the STRONG rs diffs (AYC/ACD can be a pain to maintain and fragile esp for > 350hp dragracing). Yes there have been some problems... but these will be sorted out with time!

The six speed has been recalled for a potentially defective linkage insertion.
