Dropped tool in engine help
just my 2c...drop the tray and get it over with...The time, money and gas used to get a maginet that will give you very limited reach from the top of the engine bay will do little for you..With the tray off, it will either fall out or you wil be able to see it..In the case the tool you dropped isn't obvious with the try off...the number of places it could be is numerous and probing all the nooks and crannies with a mag sticking to everything will be next to impossible.. No offense magnet users. I am thinking simple and quick, since a he doesn't have a magnet tool yet.
Honestly, my telescoping magnet was one of my best tools ever purchased. I have dropped screws, bolts, nuts, tools, etc and my telescoping magnet found them all. I just guide it to where they fell down and eventually I hear the clink that means my magnet found it. It is a good investment.
If you can see it your can probaly grab it with something, I drop tools alot. Being a mechanic you learn that you can make your arms and hands fit into alot of tiny places. Usualy If I can see the tool I just go right for a magnet so I don't knock it down further and Be patient. Rember don't get jumpy trying to pick up the tool, it can get worse. Slower is faster.
The undertray has a number of cross braces molded into the plastic. Sometimes they'll act like small compartments and fasteners or tools won't slide out. Don't ask me how I know.
The magnet is a great assist. Sometimes you can find where the part or tool is located by tapping with your palm on the undertray and listening for the part to "bounce"
