Vortex Generator Clairification

I was in another thread and the knowledge, or lack there of just astounded me as to exactly what the purpouse or the idea of a vortex generator was, is and what it does.

I just want the community to know exactly what they are putting on their cars, and even though it looks good, it has a functional purpouse.

The triangle-shaped bumps generate vortices, which have the effect of creating turbulent air keeping air stuck to the car and helping the rear wing do its job better. The result is higher downforce at high speeds. As you all should know, traction is a great benefit. Canards, vortex generators and lips all look really cool, but not because they just look good, because they actually have a functional purpouse at high speeds. An Evo that is stuck to the road is a happy Evo! An Evo with a VG and no wing is just doing it for looks.

If anyone wants to discuss aerodynamics, lets do so and get the miscommunication out of the way on what some aero parts do for the Evo. It does not fly, but by god it almost does

A thread on this a while ago had an awesome link to a huge Mitsubishi .PDF detailing wind tunnel testing of the VG, it was really interesting. It basically got rid of this low pressure zone behind our back windshields and in the process directed the air a bit further downwards towards the wing.

Because of how it reduces that low pressure pocket area people swear it's good for like 1 MPG Having said that, I dont' really like the VG looks for my car... i like the smooth lines a bit more but to each his own.

Are the Rexspeed ones modeled closely enough after the stock ones to function the same way? Or are those more for looks since I'm sure they didn't do any real testing I'm sure?

I heard they were used for extra downforce

They create turbulence in the rear forcing the rear wing to do it's job of creating downforce and keeping the rear of the car planted on the track better.

An Evo with a VG and a wing has more rear downforce than an Evo with a VG and no wing and even MORE than an Evo with no VG and no wing.

Does anyone disagree with that?

I don't disagree. But Mitsu = Rexspeed or Mitsu > Rexspeed?

The aftermarket simply took a VG and made a mould off it. They didn't reinvent it.

I'm glad we were able to enlighten you. You learn something everyday!!! His FWD Civic and that big wing = rice. Feel free to print this out and hand it to him.
