A question 400+whp Evo's...
I talked to a guy with a 400+whp evo that was cageless and when I asked him what he used the car for he said "I daily drive it, get some races in every now and then, and that's about it."
I understand there's a bragging rights side, but what I don't understand is why have 400+whp at all? I mean racing on the street aside which is very unsafe, it's just as unsafe to have that much HP on that track. Chances are if you're only driving it on the street and do maybe one track day a year it seems like a waste.
So my question is why do you feel the need to make 400+whp on the street for a car that most likely never sees track time. I assume this because most of the cars I see in the show n shine section do not have cages and there are a lot of them making this kind of power.
and a sub question to this question is for big turbo guys, do you feel that you can drive your car 7/10th's or more by having a big turbo? Seems like it would require more skill since there's more technique involved.

Well my car mostly sits in the garage and I wouldn't consider it a full out race car. It's full weight and makes about 390 on pump and a little over 420 on race gas. Why you ask? For fun. I work hard and daily drive 97 civic so having the Evo in my pocket just makes me feel good inside...lol Theres nothing like coming home on a Friday after a long week at work and getting that adrenaline rush back in my life... To each is own... I think the better question is why the hell not?

If you had a cage it presents a safety issue for the guys that daily drive there cars as they are not always going to be wearing a helmet. Cages in street cars in not overly safe. If your head touches one of the bars in an accident it would not be pretty.
Why wouldn't you want to make 400hp and drive the car everyday?

Why have an EVO at all! Who really needs the factory 280-300 hp. What kind of F***** question is that. Why do ppl buy Z06's or GT3. Not everyone is diehard into racing. I mean damn, if you drive your car daily, such as the guy you talked to, and had 400 whp. Thats even more money that you have to pay to keep the dam thing up and running. Maybe he doesn't race it as much because he doesn't have time or money.

James I didn't say upgrading the car at all is worthless I'm saying that 400+whp is a lot. In fact more than what most people can handle as reported by a few UK magazines. Street cars will never legally take advantage of 400whp, that being said the reason why I chose the 400whp marker is because that puts you almost beyond a Z06 crank hp wise.
Beyond that most of the corvettes I see are regular C5's or C6's and you know what they say about GT3's and not tracking them. Three of my neighbors have GT3's and all of them have been tracked, the one of two Z06's I know of either gets dragged, tracked, or sits. The other guy openly admits that he bought the Z06 because it pulls in attention from clients, ladies, etc. Well the Evo is not exactly a ladies mobile, nor is it a car you pick up business clients in (unless you own a shop).

thats a pretty age old question. why keep going, why keep dumping money in the car. most the time youll never get it back. but... its kinda what we do (car enthusiast) it will never be enough. we will always want to go faster and quicker, wether drag or road course or whatever your poison is. we will always just keep building and going faster. i think its just the way of the wrencher.
plus overkill is always more fun!!!

Yea, I understand where your coming from. I guess I see my self as the guy you talked to. I would like to have about 400 whp in my evo, but be able to drive it daily. I personally am not huge in the tracking. I really just don't have the time. It doesn't mean that I wont hit the track, its just that I wont tear it up every time I get a chance. I don't know if that made any sence?
If I had a GT3 it would be really hard not to have it on the road, or least on the weekends.
If i had stupid money Yes I would have a GT3 for track purposes only. But I don't.

Purevibez I can understand that point of view. Which is why I haven't knocked the pleasure side of it, I guess my other question should be for those of you have it or have had it how many times have you used it?
This is not a thread to insult or deter anyone from modding, I just thought it would be a good thread to start as a discussion amongst car enthusiasts. Surely I've a lot of mods on my car and still more to come for next years track season.
To provide further acknowledgement of my understanding I'm a car enthusiasts as well (DUH I wouldn't be here if I wasn't lol) but I'm just a track junky. Beyond that I get enjoyment from watching the car sit, or working on it and pondering up ways to fix design flaws (the mechanical engineering side of me). I like the design, tuning, and engineering perspective more than I do a street drive.

a 400+ hp evo isnt very hard to achive.
i have around 400. never dynod but im estimating im pretty close.. but why did i spend the money to make it that fast?
i agree street racing is very unsafe.. just because you have alot of HP dosnt mean you street race.
i actually am a very slow driver. i hate paying for gas, and i always try and keep my miles per tank pretty close.
why do i have 400 HP? because i know its there.. and when those old *** guys in their stockass brand new c6 corvettes who think they have the fastest car on the road. and when they get cocky.. i know i could murder him in a race. so i dont even bother. unless ofcourse he wants to put money on it, then ill take him to the local 1/4 mile and show him what that my $25k evo will kill his 60K corvette all day long.. (till my clutch or tcase blows)
and for the people that think were dumb for "dumping money" into our car and well never get it back.. well unless its a collectors edition, its the same way with anything.. why dump money into a brand new house if your going to lose so much value as soon as you step in it.. why buy a TV? why buy anything?
