The DSM/EVO Shootout, the community and Buschur Racing
The DSM/EVO Shootout, the community and Buschur Racing
This is going to be a long one. I hope you all will take the time to read it and understand a bit about myself, Buschur Racing, our past, present and future. It is going to be filled with my thoughts, emotions, dreams and probably a few things I dislike.
It's hard to figure out where to start this. I want this to be well thought out. I don't want to bore anyone but I don't want to leave out details I feel are important. Do I start at the beginning or do I start at the present and work my way back?
I think maybe starting back a year ago would be best. I am going to leave names and shops out of this as much as I can when I speak of something negative as I am definetely not trying to start another war. You will see that as this is written.
A year ago there was a discussion on EVOm about a companies part that had failed (not one of our parts). I went into this thread and offered the suggestion that the person contact the company as I was sure they would handle it as there were many revision made to this part that had failed. In response to that suggestion the company owner came into the thread and called us all "stupid" or something along those lines. Well needless to say I wasn't impressed with being referred to as "stupid" after trying to help his customer. This got a little ugly, went to PM's and E-mails and I figured it was best to just drop it and I did. A month or so went by and this same shop owner decided to take a jab at me in another thread about some bearing polishing. I overlooked the comment until one of his buddies then brought it back up and added to it. It was then pointed out to me and I was sent links from the NABR site of all these guys getting a big kick out of trying to rile up this entire thread and **** me off. THAT is what started a mess. It was at that point I decided that making public the fact that a particular product did not work well was in line. I had tested this product twice before as a dealer of the product finding the same thing, it did not work. Out of friendship with the shop who built it I kept my mouth shut. OK, all of you know what I am talking about. It turned into a huge mess, neither myself or the other guy handled ourselves the way we should have, it was ugly and caused a lot of problems. I personally wish it would have never ended up how it did but it was certainly caused by TWO grown men getting pissed off and handling themselves wrong and not just ONE of us. The fact is in three seperate tests the part did not perform and that is one part of it all I can say was 100% legit, the testing. Looking back on it, I wish that the shop owner and group from NABR who instigated it all would have decided not to see if they could **** me off and when I did get pissed maybe I could have over looked it. That was then, this is now. The only reason any of that is important is it leads up to the present in all of this.
I'd now like to go back to about a month an a half ago. There was another heated arguement going on, as there always is, on our own Buschur Racing forums. The guy in the center of it all was heated and everyone was attacking him. I tried to carry on a debate but it was so ugly nothing could be seen except for the hate that was there. This guy ended up banned from our forum. He then went on to make some Youtube videos where he was also pissed off, they were directed at me and Buschur Racing.
So, for the last year things have gotten very ugly. There is a lot of termoil in the DSM/EVO community. I spent a lot of time thinking about it all. I thought of days gone by, of why I do all this, of what else I could do with my life. I thought about how my niece (my brother/partner's daughter) asked me at Christmas time about some negative stuff she read about me on the internet. I thought about my son and daughter growing up and seeing some of this crap on the internet too. I guess I did some real soul searching.
I decided then that it was time for some change. I think that maybe at times in your life you have to sink to your lowest point in order to rise up and better yourself. Like a guy who kills and is sent to prison to then find God while he is there and turn his life around. I wrote a letter to Nick and Jarrod (my two sales guys) and told them that things need to change and they needed to change immediately. I told them that my crappy attitude was no way to lead and it had worn off on the two of them. I told them that we ALL were going to make an effort to lead this community again. Buschur Racing has grown every year since it was started 20 years ago. The only exception was the few years between the DSM's fading slightly and the release of the EVO. Since 2003 we have had great growth and record sales each and every year, 2008 was no exception. This new attitude is NOT about money, it is NOT about me worrying that my attitude has ruined us. It is simply because my attitude has sucked for quite some time. Truthfully I believe it has sucked because of the growth of our shop. Even with a bad attitude it has continued to grow and this has let me say I don't give to ****s about a lot of things that I should have cared about. While I will never be the guy who is going to kiss someone's butt to get their money or the guy who will lie to you just to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, I realize I need to change my over all attitude and not be so "rude".
It was at that time I contacted the guy I spoke of earlier that was banned from our Buschur Racing forums. I simply asked him, "What is the problem?" He replied with a very long e-mail. He explained to me how at one time he looked up to me, how he wanted to attend the Shootout and was in the DSM community for about 5 years. I read and listened to what he had to say. I responded with comments about what he said and some of the things he didn't like and explained my side of what he saw. I again listened to his responses and after quite a few long e-mails him and I left with maybe not being friends but with a new understanding of each other. We are now able to talk without yelling and listen to what each of us have to say. He is actually an intelligent guy who has since given me some input that I value. It did take me wanting to find out "How can I fix this?" and taking the first step to get there to get it done though. Had I not decided to change my messed up outlook/attitude he'd still be pissed off and there would be 50 more people fighting right now. Instead he is back on our forums, the discussions are going smoothly with other members and things look freaking good.
A few weeks ago I got involved in testing intake manifolds again. As most of you know that's what started a lot of the mess in the community in the first place. I tried to get a mutual friend to myself and Marco to have Marco send an intake down to him for testing (the new cast intake). Marco was hesitant and I can't say as I blame him. I knew that without trying to fix many things from my past there was no moving forward to the future. I ended up buying an intake manifold myself. I flow benched the intake and it was phenominal on the flow bench. I then swallowed my pride and called Marco. I told him what I was doing and was looking for his approval. Well, I wasn't going to get it. We agreed that instead of posting the flow bench numbers I would dyno his intake first and then contact him again. If the results were positive we'd discuss me posting them. I was up for just about anything Marco had to say as I truly wanted to put this crap behind both of us. Through our talking I think him and I both agreed that the TWO of us handled ourselves wrong and were both to blame for the mess that had been caused last year. I put the intake manifold on my car against the best performing intake we have had to date. The car instantly showed the best top end power of any intake I had tested. I called Marco and he wasn't surprised. It was agreed he was happy enough with the results that I could go ahead and post my information for all to see. I feel/felt that after our few phone calls and the testing that atleast things were improved, they may never be fixed but I made an attempt and feel better about doing so.
OK, so that I guess covers the lowest times and they are fairly recent but not the most recent.
Just about the time I decide it is time to lead by example and patch up many things from the past I find out last week that a race has been scheduled for the same day as the 17th Annual DSM/EVO Shootout here in Ohio. This is very discouraging to me as just about the time I decided I want to put my best foot forward and have a new improved attitude I get hit with this.
This other race is the Subaru VS Mitsubishi event that has been going on for 5 years. This race was the idea of Al Friedman from Dynoflash. He thought of the concept, he introduced the concept to Englishtown- Raceway Park. The event was promoted heavily by Al. The race has never had a huge turn out but has been continued for the last 5 years. The nice thing about the race was it gave guys with a DSM/EVO somewhere else to run their cars during the year other than once a year at the DSM/EVO Shootout in Ohio. With Al's help I also organized this same race here to run in the Spring at Summit Motorsports Park. For us it was also a low turn out compared to the DSM/EVO Shootout as there just aren't enough Subaru guys interested in drag racing, especially against DSM/EVO's. Last year I turned the race into a Sport Compact National's event instead to help grow the race and involve more people.
This takes me into the past. The DSM Shootout. Yes, the DSM Shootout. Before it was ever the DSM/EVO Shootout it was just DSM's. The DSM's that started it all for me. The DSM's that I have spent the last 20 years of my life working on, racing and supporting. 20 years ago I went from being a V8 guy to a DSM guy. I bought my first brand new 1990 Eagle Talon AWD, black with a grey cloth interior. The car ran 15.11 in the quarter, I was hooked. In 1991 I bought the car that made us famous, I ordered a stripped down black cherry 1991 Eagle Talon AWD. Manual windows, manual door locks, same grey cloth interior. Back then the choice of modifications were very short. Dynomax 2.25" cat back, K&N filter, Horgen manual boost controller and then the expensive HKS parts. Archer Racing was dominating the road racing world with the cars and I became a customer of there's. Equipped with the catback, filter and boost controller I headed to the track and turned in a blistering 13.48 ET. Holy ****. That was fast then and the V8 guys pissed themselves. I was so hooked. There just weren't any parts. I needed to mount a boost gauge, no place to do it. I built a mount for the center air conditioning vent, that was the first part Io built. I got involved in a club, the Mitsubishi Diamond Star Owners Group (MDSOG) and started to write articles for them. My center vent gauge holder took off. Soon I was building i/c pipes, downpipes, offroad pipes, headers, porting manifolds, turbine housings, 02 housings etc. I was told by Turbo Performance Center in MD that my car could NEVER go 12's. It was impossible and at the time they were a leader in the turbo world. I bought the very first HKS VPC and had to drive to Turbo Performance Center in MD to have it installed and tuned. It was a few weeks later that my DSM was the first to ever run 12's. My love for that car, my passion for it was simply out of control. I felt I had to get people together so we could bond and enjoy these great machines. In 1992 I organized a few guys along with MDSOG to get together at Norwalk Raceway Park. We had a NA Mazda RX7 show up, Bob Haworth and his HKS equipped 1990 DSM, Dean Bradley and his 1992 Eclipse and myself. My Eagle was down with a broken axle at the dealership so I raced my 1969 Chevelle that night. There was 4 of us there along with Mike and his wife Pam from the MDSOG. We had a GREAT time. It was decided then and there for me that I would do that event again the next year. In the beginning we did the event on Friday night and just used Lane 8 at the track for our group. The next year there were 8 of us. I can't remember all of them but myself, Bill Lawrence, Jeff Hill were three I can recall for sure. Back then Jeff Hill ran his dad's service station, County Road Gulf. Jeff and I were great friends then. He later closed the gas pumps down and called his business Turbo Trix. Jeff and I remained friends over the years, we did a lot of business back and forth and a lot of support in the community. Jeff always made the Shootout with his great wife Tracy and a large group of guys. Jeff never had much luck at the shootout, always seemed to break and I remember one night hearing my air compressor running nearly all night as Jeff and his guys fixed a head in my driveway while I tried to sleep for the next day. The year after what I consider the first actual DSM Shootout the event grew to 27 people coming out. Every year it doubled for a long time. We've rented halls to have buffet dinners, entire clubs for pizza parties, had late night bon fires, street racing out on rubber road Pinks style! We've all talked ****, raced ****, broke **** and done a lot of ****. We've also grown into one of the tightest group of car guys that have ever existed. We've helped each other, fought each other and even puked on each other. Been thrown out of parking lots, hotels and some even arrested. In the end though the Shootout has always been about getting everyone together for a great time, comradery and some great racing. I didn't start this event 18 years ago out of spite for someone else's success. I didn't start this event to prove a point or out of hate. I started this event to bring great people and great cars together in one spot so we could all be friends and have a great time together. You know what? It worked. There have been more good times and friendships made at the DSM/EVO Shootout than I bet any other single race of it's kind in history. The DSM/EVO Shootout is what it is today because of the great people who attend it each year and then bring back their friends because it is so much fun the next year. The DSM/EVO Shootout is not because of Buschur Racing, it was started by us but certainly not why it has grown and is still such a great success 18 years later. It is because of all the GREAT people who come to Ohio to support it each year!
This competing event really has me ticked off. It's not because there is a small group of guys that hate me. I have brought much of that on myself and have to live with it. That is not the problem. The problem is that this group of guys have done nothing in their lives to promote any type of comradery and friendships in the community. They have not thought about "what is the DSM/EVO Shootout". The DSM/EVO Shootout was organized by me because of my love of the cars and the friendships I have made through them! They (the organizers of the other race) have only thought to themselves, "How can we **** with David Buschur?" This other event will not kill the DSM/EVO Shootout, I've had the race with 4 people at it. The only thing having an event the same day as the DSM/EVO Shootout accomplishes is splitting the community and giving true enthusiasts one less event to attend and race at. It is a slap in the face to all the people who own the cars and like to race them. The competing event is not even the event of the guys who are pulling this malicous move, the event was the idea of Al Friedman and has now been taken over by people who only have the adjenda to hurt the entire community with it.
Now some of you may ask, "David, why don't you just move your event?" That is a legitimate question and I would gladly do that if it were possible. First, we scheduled our event last August and released the information for the dates etc. Summit Motorsporsts Park has NO other weekends available, so it is impossible. Also there have been tens of thousands of event schedules printed and mailed already. Also because I have had my event scheduled for 7 months already many people have already taken their vacation to attend and made their hotel reservations. IF it was possible for me to move my dates I would do it, unfortunately I can not. A close friend of mine contacted Englishtown and told them about the conflicting dates and told them that doing that would hurt the turn out of both events. I was shocked to find out that Javier Ortega and Englishtown both were aware of the dates being the same and not only were for it but thought it was humorus that the organizers are attempting to mess with the event in Ohio. Very sad that there is a group of people that are that self centered and ignorant to the fact that it hurt YOU guys the most.
Our DSM/EVO Shootout consists of two days of full time, non stop action. The first day is an open house at our shop. The town is completely over run with bad *** DSM and EVO's. The street is completely closed off on both ends of town, huge "Welcome Buschur Racing Shootout Particpants" banners are hung across the streets on both ends of town, there is a huge BBQ, dyno competition and vendors. I allow all vendors to come to the race for FREE so YOU guys can see what is out there and make choices on who you want to support, it gives you more bang for your buck. The next day we have the track all day to ourselves. It is a DSM/EVO race, only Mitsubishi powered cars are allowed to race. It is for US and not shared with other cars. We run a total of nine classes so everyone has a place to fit in. In 2008 we paid out $6600 in cash to the racers along with awarding super nice Made in the USA trophies to all of them. Again, vendor space is FREE so that you guys can see what is out there all at one event. I pay the track a lot of extra money to prep the track constantly throughout the day to make sure that you guys have the best shot at setting a record, even if it's just a personal record. If the event was about the money I wouldn't pay out $6600 from my own pocket to the racers, I'd hand out a trophy and a handshake. I have also got a rain date already set up for Monday IF it just so happened we get rained out. (This has happened ONCE in 18 yeras) There are 2,000 spectators at this event, for racers that's 2,000 potential fans and for vendors that's 2,000 potential customers. These two days I described doesn't even make a dent in the experience. Everywhere you go, because all of this is within a few miles of each other, you pass by another DSM or EVO that waves to you. The hotels are JAMMED full of DSM's and EVO's and with friends from years past and friends you don't even know you are going to make yet. It's hard to describe it. Other people have attempted to get an atmosphere like this with their "lifestyle" events. Nothing compares to what happens in Ohio for those 2-3 days. For those that have experienced it they know, for those that haven't, I can't explain it and neither can anyone else. It's just amazing. It because of the love of the cars that it all has come together. It's not from hating someone or trying to ruin something else, something driven by hate can not have the same unbelievably good outcome.
continued in next post.

It has come to my attention over the last few hours of typing this that some racers are going to the E-town event because of the high stakes pay out. I was unaware of these types of races being formed in the Honda and Supra world's. I am and have always been willing to change the way the Shootout is run. I get suggestions all the time and have adjusted the rules many times over the years to fit what is happening today. If a high stakes gamblers style race is what some of the racers want I am all for it. It costs me nothing, it is only beneficial. I'd be more than willing to add that to the race as an additional Q16 Gamblers race and pay every single cent of the entry fee for it back out the racers. I have to know these things and have the suggestions in order to make changes. Today was the first I have had it suggested.
I can not go back and erase everything I have done that has offended someone in my lifetime. I can make an attempt, which I have done to great lenghts in the last few months, to change how I do many things. I have mended some relationships and tried to fix others. I can only move forward with a better out look and attitude and hope that people can see that. I can also hope that by displaying this and making an attempt to better myself that it will also better the entire community and bring everyone together.
It is the choice of all of you to also move forward. It is your choice where you decide to go to race and which event to support. I personally feel the other event is a great idea. The DSM/EVO and Import community as a whole needs more events to run at. The problem is the attempt by the promoters of the other event to split the community up and have the event on the day of the World's Largest Mitsubishi gathering. It's just not a good move for anyone.
I was going to post some quotes that I have had sent to me from the organizers of this event from the NABR site to prove that their intentions are of hate and to only try to effect me. I have decided to leave the quotes out of this as it goes against my new attitude. You guys can decide for yourselves without reading 50 posts of "**** Buschur, let's do our own race on the same day to **** him over."
Feel free to cut, paste and post this on any other forums or websites.
Thank you all for reading this very long post.

David Buschur
I've been a DSMer since '97. I bought my first mods ever from Buschur Racing. I spent over $1k within a few days of buying my car. Then after installing the parts (exhaust, MBC, K&N), I installed a $25 boost gauge that I'd already owned that I purchased from a local speed shop before I even got the car. When I called Buschur to ask where the best place to tap it was, David himself told me "I don't know, why dont you ask whoever you bought the gauge from" and hung up. I haven't spent a penny at his place of business since.
Fast forward a decade, Buschur starts selling chinese knock-offs of EVO3 16g turbos. I speak my mind about the questionable ethics of a shop whose slogan was "Innovate, never immitate" and instead of listening to my point of view, I get a response full of personal attacks.
A couple years later, I speak my mind again - this time on this forum. Buschur replies by telling my to wash my mouth out with some buckshot. That being said, my personal experiences don't even come close to scratching he surface of what you've pulled with this community that you pretend to care so much about.
So you'll forgive me if I don't buy the whole Zen Buschur BS for a second. You're worried about the loss of revenue because enough people have finally had enough of your crap that they decided to hit you where it hurts the most. Karma's a *****. I'll be showing my support by attending the NJ event as I have every year since it started.

david and his crew have never personally rubbed me the wrong way
I know how hard it is to admit you know you've done stupid things so that is commendable
I'm sure both events will do well

David and his team have always delivered quality parts to me, and I can therefore only give him my
positive regards. The shootout event last year was awesome, and I'm confident the event will
continue to grow.

You say you've turned over a new leaf, how do you plan on proving this? Sympathy post aside, how does BR plan on fixing their bad dealings in the past, ensuring that the same E-thugging doesn't happen again?

Its all good brotha lol, I will be at the shoot out!
But I could see why things could get stressful to you.
-Your a huge name name in the 4g63 world
-Im sure your shop is always busy
-Your probably constantly on the phone handling business
-You post on a bunch of forums and NOT just to promote your parts, you help as well
-Im sure your schedule is packed with events, etc.
Not everyone understands how busy and probably stressed you are. But in the end you still have a love for the sport.
So, I respect that big time.

Last year was the first year I have ever attended something like the shootout. It was a great time with great people. I got to meet new people and formed many great relationships(Forced Performance) because of it. I also got to see alot of old friends like Al at Dynoflash who I wouldn't of seen if it wasn't for the event. For both I am grateful. I have looked forward to this years event since the day we left Ohio last year. I will be there with or without a car. As for the other stuff mentioned... Sure there are debates and heated discussions. To refuse to forgive and forget like some are posting is childish and is what causes the types of problems mentioned. David I commend you for stepping up regardless of what has happened in the past. I try to stay out of the debates and am unsure of all the gossip, but you are a standup guy to me and have always been nice and helpful to me even when I was just buying intakes 5 years ago.... To the future and this year's event....

So, I met you and Shep and Rau several times in Colorado and other places when I was cutting my DSM teeth with my GSX. You speak of passion in your post which is a feeling I try to convey to people now a days when they talk about the DSM days of old. In my opinion, there are Evo guys, and that's great and all, but there were those of us who were getting laughed at in 92' when we pulled up to the starting line and then the demeanor changed after we got our ticket and got back in the staging lanes.
I am a nobody, much like the thousands of old time DSM hands that speckle the nation that didn't open a shop. I have 2 DSM's now and an Evo. I already have plans for my next DSM which is to get back into my original DSM again. I currently own no BR parts. Which I'll explain below.
I'm not sure what the beef with any of these people is, don't really care. I have issue with some people, people who come into my town, egging young kids into a street race, while filming it, and then pull into gas stations and call them pussies when they won't race them. I want to see that sponsored car back in town so I can point out some vital statistics about street racing and teenagers to him.
Unfortunately for you Dave, the same retard is cupping your bag the whole time in the video, which, at the very least, gives the impression that the both of you are in cahoots. If this isn't so, then I can release my ill will towards you and once again reconsider buying anything from you, which I swore off doing once I saw the antics of this jacktard and how he did nothing but lollipop your bag the whole video.
As far as the Shootout, you are in Ohio. If I can make it, I will go. I can beat Subaru's all day here at SAR with rare exception so I'd rather be there. Plus my old DSM hand buddy lives in Yellow springs. You've met him too, but you wouldn't remember and I wouldn't expect you to.
They always say you never get a second chance to make a first impression, and you are judged by the company you keep. I am able to let that first part slide given that the second part doesn't fall under the category of unacceptable.
Oh, and Al. When you total your car here in San Antonio on the 410 access road, street racing some 17 year old with too few years behind the wheel to know better, don't be surprised if the trauma team at UTSA forgets the pain killers. No one ever died of "Pain" before.

IMO the people who decided to have a race on the same day as the already posted date of the Buschur shootout are cowards.. The Buschur Shootout I will guarantee will be 20x the amount in attendance over the BS race in Etown.. The Etown race will FLOP IMO..

I'll admit, buschur makes quality parts. I feel a lot of evo drivers are happy with their upgrades... which is very commendable. I'm glad you guys put effort and heart into your cars, and I'm happy you are aware of what you have been doing.
I have been on these boards for the last few years and I've witnessed attacks (even personal ones on me cause I am from the northwest even though I never said anything negative about buschur). I quickly realized how poor the attitude was from Buschur especially David himself. First impressions are hard to expunge. There are reasons northwest drivers have Northwest > Ohio stickers... and it isn't the quality of products IMO... it was the attitude from buschur themselves.
With that being said, I am glad you recognize these faults. And I hope you realize that next time you do an attack on someone. I think anyone can change if they want to, and it sounds like David wants to turn this image around. While I won't jump on the bandwagon until David and co. prove themselves, I am glad this corner has been turned.
We are Evo drivers, we shouldn't be fighting among each other. We should be doing everything we can to keep this car alive... just get along you know?
My advice David, don't personalize any messages and don't get into disputes. Just let it go and everything will be ok. A bad reputation is worse than bad products. Good luck bud
