Two guys, two mods, and a tune... in the 11's
I've been curious about this as well but hadn't had a chance to ask my tuner.
Often I hear people speak about how retarded timing can help spool in areas of the map. But I've always discounted the notion just because it seems logical to me, that the differences in exhaust gas volume between say 15 and 10 degrees advance would not really be significant enough to outweigh the power loss.
Speaking of knock 9sec9.. what do you think about John Banks asserting a bit of knock in the map actually produces the best power.

One more thing. The above logs have not reached the target boost of 26.5 yet, so the 2 or 1 count isn't reflected in the logs. Typically on this tune, when we hit 26.5,26.5,26.5 then falling a little, we'll see a 2 or 1 count in the 6250 area too. This was just a bit cleaner due to lower boost.
crcain, On the 2 step, the timing is critical to building QUICK boost. An example: One night, while Jim was bracket racing, he didn't have any time to get the car up on the 2 step (due to being on it too long if he went wot after he staged), so I modified his timing map and I have the log to show that he made 25-26 psi in less than 2 seconds. I actually think it was about 1.5 seconds or so. Any, further testing proved this to be true. My experience is that the larger turbo can handle the lower timing for a longer period of time, better than the stocker can. The stocker is like on/off vs the T67 for example. Notice the timing map on Jims is 10 degrees in 2 step area, but 8 during low load shift points. This aids in detering the onset of knock.
LOL jeez. I have just about every bolt on possible with cams and a tme turbo that made 322 on a dynodynamics. And yet somehow a stock IX with two parts and a tune would cream me on any track in the country. Mad props.
Thanks very much for the props. We're having fun, and I truly mean that. The fun factor doesn't necessarily go up, the faster you go. As a matter of fact, sometimes quite the opposite. I think NHRA has it right with the 11.50 limit with no rollbar. That's plenty fast to have fun and a street killer at the same time. We're really anxious to reach the mid 11's, but not by just throwing parts at it. When we've reached our goals, we'll be able to look back and have a very small list of how we got there. The cost of that list will be much less than previously thought. Along the way, we're happy to take side trips to do some testing and developement of new products, like the Hoosier tires. Thanks again for the positive comments, that's what keeps us moving forward.

Which 'during spool' period? On the street or at the track. Between the gear changes and recurring spool up? During initial spoolup on the 2 step. The between shifts and 2 step I have higher loads with reduced timing. On the street and between shifts spool up tracks are different. My logs show that by changing the timing, we increased the loads quicker. I have proof of that. On 2 step, the boost builds quicker. Not sure what area or conditions your talking about. Give me a specific area and I maybe I can find a log with that condition.
added: I also have noticed that 10 degrees in the 2 step seems to be the 'highest' number (most advance) that still shows any noticeable benefit of lowering the timing. 8 degrees shows quicker boost. 11 degrees didn't show much affect if any. Again, remember other factors/maps/turbos make a major difference. The T67/91octane I tuned noticed a quicker spool/boost, so I now have him at 8 degrees in the 2 step and between shifts.

got a question about tuning. ive got my two step at 5500. also have another map with it at 6000. in both maps i have the timing for the rpm of the two step at 120 load=6, 140 and 160 loads=8.
it seems to build about 12psi after about 2-3.5 seconds. how would i build more psi for the launch?
also, please correct me if im wrong, but the more boost you run, the less timing you can run correct? also where does AFR play into more boost/more timing? i thought i had it all straightned out until i read this thread....lol

. The 9sec9/OKIX car is finished, and tomorrow we are going to re-decal it for our sponsors.We will be going to the track with my car for a test and tune session tomorrow night at IRP just to knock the rust off the driver and sharpen the tune. Indy
