As far as I know, there are supposedly EVO 7's here in south Fl... I missed it but I was told that a yellow EVO 7 was at Moroso Motorsports Park, and that it ran a 13.00 in the quarter.. As far as Evolution Imports, I was told by them that they only import the RS, and that they do not Import GSR's... Myself now, I will absolutely be purchasing the 8 no matter how it comes, being the fact that I have a daily driven 12 sec gsx... It doesn't take much at all to make the 4g63 seriously haul ***....

As much hype as there is/was about the EVO VII's and EI, I would have thought that the owners and/or EI would be posting (to stir up business for EI). Since that is not happening, my head says that something is not 100% correct and they want to "lay low"?

I could be wrong, but with trying to sell them on ebay (last resort), they would be better off selling them here for free.

There was an article recently about some guys in florida driving Lotus Elise's and how some folks have had them "registered" but not legally. I think they are now looking into it alittle more.

They only import RS's for off-road use. The street legal ones they're importing are RS II's. GSR's are not made in LHD and they do not deal with them so far as I've read on their page or heard from anyone else.

There is a Yellow Evo VII in FL, movies of which are somewhere on this site, and there are probably a couple others around too. I'm glad there's another person out there who understands that no matter how the VIII comes across it will be easy to tune.

I'm curious to hear if they physically upgrade anything on the car to make it meet US requirements.

I knew a person who brought into the US a Civic Type R and had it legally registered. Some of the things that needed upgrading to meet US Govt spec were;
1. glass had to be of the shatterproof variety in all windows.
2. Doors AND bumpers had to have the proper structure beams in place as per a US Spec equivalent car.
3. Speedos had to read in mph NOT kph.
4. Emissions equipment had to be in place and tested to meet US emissions minimum numbers (which is more lenient that CA emissions)

How do they deal with the fact that the US and Japanese standard VIN# has a different number of characters? US Vin# all have to be of a standard nomenclature and length...Japanese market cars do not always adhere to this requirement.

If these cars aren't having all or most of the above done to them, the company that imports them may be doing other things to get their cars registered. ie...taking vin plaques from crashed LAncers and affixing them to the Evo's they bring in from abroad.

But in the end, unless EI, speaks up in this thread, we will never know what sorts of things are required for an Evo VII to be registered in the US...or they may be unwilling to tell us this info since it is the bread and butter of their specialty.

I seriously want to get a evo from EI, but I don't know if it can be registered and used in the USA. For example what modifications has to be done for it to run on US gas, and how can I make it street legal like any other car. And what kind of insurance can I get for it? Liability only?
Because I mean if it's imported, Insurance will think parts for these cars have to be imported so will not allow a Comprehensive coverage. Also what kind of vin number will have to be used with the car, would It be easier to make it US Street Legal since they will be selling Lancer Evolutions here? I mean do it through some not soo legit way. What about title and registration, how am I gonna register a vehicle that doesn't have a VIN Number?

Infinity, it's more like....If the Evo you own is imported, the insurance people will know by the VIN# you give em if it's the same VIN that came on the car from the factory.

Like a salvaged car, insurance companies don't like to insure something that is unknown to them. Since they have lots of calculations and what not that tell them what to charge you, if the car isn't sold in this country, they will have no calculations with which to base your premium. They will then,

A. Refuse coverage.
B. Give you a stated value policy.

I have a stated value policy on my 61 Austin Mini since I had it imported from the UK. The Vin# is different than US Mini's, so they knew it was imported. It didn't come up in their system when I tried to get a policy....

No one on these forums has had any problems so far aside from actually getting the car. As Senor Info put it they may be slightly less than legal, but that has yet to be proven or disproven.

And FYI EI is now importing CTR's as well for 25k (Pretty good buy imho).

Yeah, I've heard from people who've gotten their EI Evo 7's that they've had no problem getting insurance. One of them mentioned State Farm.

I know Allstate will insure off-the-wall stuff sometimes. You usually have to bring in a picture to show them what it is you want insured, and they may require some inspection or minor paperwork, but they're not too bad about it.

If you're interested in an EI Evo, the best bet would be to give a call. They're less net based and do most everything by phone, which makes sense for things like purchasing imported cars... I'm sure you'll have tons of additional qs to have answered.

Yeah, I talked with him today, and tried to get him to swing by Kansas City on his way. It's not THAT far out of the way (only a few hundred miles.... )

I can't find anywhere where it says that they're going to have the active differential on the US Evo 8. So that means they're going to have the viscous differential? I don't know about you, but if that was true, I would rather import a J spec Evo 8 with the active differential. Do you think they're going to come out with another type for US?

Tux, I'm glad that you started this thread 'cuz you are right where I am...looking at 7's from EI. I haven't bugged Adam recently because he is a really decent guy and I know he is customer oriented and I really want to know the answers to things that may be sensetive in nature. I read the above about state farm and insurance issues and have heard that before. If the current owners have gotten them insured, I think there's really not a problem because the policy is written for the VIN so the insurance company would have a hard time wiggling out of the contract in the event of a misfortune.
I'm all with you, Tux, on looking into EI fully. Let Adam know that I talked to him about a year ago and said I'd call again once I knew the 8 specs for the US. He's going to be answering all your questions so just let me know what you find out and I'll be a partner in ferreting out all we can (I have some friends who are lawyers...well, ok a dad and a sister...but don't hold that against me ...they do civil rights and environment anyway so they're the "good kind" ...but they will know who will know about all this importation law and can point us to someone who can look over all the details once we have 'em. I think it's just wise to double-check stuff before I plunk down $35K or so) So, keep hammering away at this thread...it's a great one.
