EVO General Reliability
EVO General Reliability
I am seriously considering the EVO and am trying to find info on the car's general reliability. I will be using it as a daily driver not as a weekend toy thus I will be putting on the miles. Thanx.

I have close to 14K miles and that's in 4 months, I commute 140 miles round trip each day and the EVO has been the most reliable vehicle I've owned. I have yet had to take it in for anything going wrong. The clutch is the only thing I hear as the weak point about this car, I'm very weary of my clutch, but I haven't had to replace it yet, so it might just be all the tales getting to me. If you will only commute in this car, and not also use it as a toy on the weekend, I think you can spend 30K better. Don't get me wrong, I love my EVO, but if I didn't want an amazing mountain burner for the weekends, I never would of got it, and I definetely would of been disappointed. If you are only going to commute with it, I would suggest a 1.8T Audi A4 for the same money. Otherwise, if you do play on the weekends, this is the perfect car.
Thanx very much for your input. I do plan on having fun with the car as well as it being the daily driver. I agree that if you are not going to use the car than why buy it. I was just concerned about puting commuter miles on a car like the EVO vs something as the Audi A4 which you referenced. What does the dealer recommend for regular maintenance? What are you planning for winter tires? Snows or just a good all season radial?
Over 14K miles on mine with 6+ track days and several 500+ mile weekends. The car hasn't skipped a beat.
All I'd say is be sure to follow the heavy use maintenance guidelines - I have yet to meet an Evo owner who babies their car.

This is my biggest issue with the car. I have had 4 hondas over the last 11 years and none have had any problems. I love the look and the way the Evo drives but the stories on here scare me. Then again like most things most people only post when they have a problem or do not know how to drive.
I traded in my S2000 for the Evo and I was so worried about the reliability, too. It was completely unfounded to worry about it. The Evo has been a champ - no worries whatsoever. Over 12,000 miles of all kinds of driving. I even drove through New Mexico at 140 with the A/C on and the temp didn't even waver. It's very easy to modify and parts are relatively inexpensive. As long as you follow the severe maintenance guidelines as suggested above, it should last you a while. Really, the only disappointing thing (other than the dealers) has been the paint quality.
I was out looking at this car the last two days. My questions are these. Has anyone had any problems with the drivetrain at all? What about paint issues (someone mentioned that). I wasn't a big fan when i observed it in a magazine but after looking and sitting in a Evo I can say I'm a big fan. It has a lot of mods I would do anyway to a car: brembo brakes, turbo, enkei wheels, recaro seets, and I love the performance specs. Are there any recommendations for someone looking at an evo in regards to paint, body, engine or interior to watch out for when shopping for an evo?

We know how good the evo engine is but how strong is the tranny? The STi's newly designed transmission is incredibly strong (designed by Porsche).
What are some other reliablility issues? Does everyone have rust and what is DSM doing about it?
