There is carbon build up in the throttle body butterfly. Take off the throttle body, take off the TPS sensor, get TB cleaner, clean off the TB.
Yikes. Did you by any chance relocate the cable to hide it? I did this on my old Evo and the throttle was really stiff so I put it back. With my new Evo I thought I'd give it another try and was getting crazy throttle hang between shifts. And yes, there weren't any kinks.
Other than that, that's scary. My first reaction would be "AHHHHHHHHH!!!!". Then my second reaction would be clutch in, key off, and neutral to the size of the road. Damn.

lol I think I'd rather run some red lights than blow my motor =P
Happened in one of my 1gs a while back. I was goosing it coming around a on-ramp on the highway, and it stuck open. kicked the car sideways, but i killed the ignition and recovered. It was wore out throttle body shaft seals. I put some new ones in with some silicone grease and it was smooth again. Also, when they wear, you leak boost.

the throttle body was just pulled, cleaned, and serviced like 15k miles ago. it used to stick closed a little bit when the car was cold. that went away completely. the throttle body is clean.
