I'm not sure if I would buy another Mitsu. I have always been a Honda owner (2 Civics, 2 Accords, 1 CRX...none of these ever gave me any problems) but when I was introduced to the Evo, then drove one, I couldn't pass it up. I have not had any problems with the Evo so far, but I do worry when I read through these threads sometimes. My Evo is a daily driver, doesn't have any mods other than a turbo timer and aftermarket stereo (for now) and is still a baby (only 2100 miles). I do push it hard every once-in-awhile, but I don't beat the sh*t out of it.
My only ***** with Mitsubishi as a company is it's customer service. Like I said, I've owned a few Hondas. Their c.s. was excellent. They took the time to show me the ins & outs of the vehicle I was purchasing, showed me around the dealer (where to locate, parts, service, etc) and did a few follow up calls to see if I had any questions about my purchase (No, I never dealt with them regarding a warranty issue...never needed to). When I bought the Evo it was like "Here's the keys, there's the door". I wasn't expecting them to throw me a party, but at least acknowledge me somewhat! Maybe I have come to expect too much after the previous experiences I have had buying cars. Hopefully, if I ever had to deal with a warranty issue, they will give me the time of day. If not, I will make them acknowledge me this time!

I have an Evo, and I don't worry about warrantying it. I don't abuse it, I take care of it, and restrain myself on mods (dynoflash, the rest is EDM or JDM stuff). I have had nothing but great service from my dealer.

Now, drive down the street to my BMW dealer where my M3 was bought and serviced, and you will get a whole different story. That dealership was absolute CRAP! The car was fine, but the service was the most frustrating, annoying, labor intensive JOB ever. Just getting an OBVIOUS defect fixed was like pulling teeth (not speaking SPANISH was MY problem they told my one time). Oh ya, and I once had them take a 30 mile joyride in it.

I am in an Evo BECAUSE the service couldn't possibly be worse than my BMW dealer. Turns out I was right.

Oh ya, E46's are BLOWING engines due to a defect. BMW is standing behind them and that makes it ok? What about the Nakasil problems on the late 90's V-8's? And that guy out there who basically makes a comedy show out of his 745 doing the most insane things that BMW can't fix?

You guys DO whine too much.

Have owned 2 Mitsu's and currently own a Nissan. The Mitsubishi service was a good experience. The car however fell alittle short in reliability. The first problem my 99 Eclipse GSX ever had was at 4k miles when the thermostat somehow didn't open and coolant sprayed out of the radiator cap under pressure and the motor overheated. The head gasket was slightly warped. Then there was a chemical defect in the door seals and this tar-like substance would randomly ooze out of the door seals under certian conditions. It also had alot of rattles and squeaks but I could live with that. Bottom line is Mitsubishi is no Toyota but they make what we all have to have once we taste it....AWD and Turbo. I had my Mitsu dealership warranty several repairs even though I had modified the vehicle.

On my Nissan Maxima, the dealership performed a mass air flow TSB even though I had an aftermarket intake.

I've driven one EVO and was very impressed. It seemed much more solid than my Eclipse. I hope in the long run they don't develop as many squeaks and rattles like some Mitsubishi's seem to do.

My perspective is this: Who cares? Personally, I could give a flying f**k if the Evo is a Mitsubishi, Honda, Ford, etc. I bought the car for the car. If my clutch goes out on me before the warranty is over on it, I doubt I’d want it replaced with another weak factory clutch anyway since it’s just going to die again (and probably at the worst possible time).

If I can justify the amount of money I’ll loose by doing it, I’d like to ditch the VIII I got in January and replace it with an MR this fall. Not because it’s a Mitsu, but because it’s an MR. If the STI could make me feel like the Evo does, I would buy one of those without hesitation or consideration of the manufacturer. The TransAm was a great car. I’ve never really cared or even much thought about the fact that it was sold by Pontiac. If was Lamborghini or the like, ok I can see being all about the brand name. That’s a status thing. But common car manufactures such as Mitsubishi are like clothes companies. I don’t care who made my socks, as long as they fit me right for the price that’s reasonable to me.

You either want a performance car or you don’t. Who cares who makes it. If you don’t like the way Mitsubishi does things, either do it yourself or go play somewhere else. If it bothers you horribly to learn that your socks are being manufactured in a third-world sweat shop, I suggest you either learn to live with it or find some other socks that fit both your feet and your wallet. Life is too short to live with something that frustrates you so badly that you have to cry about it to anyone who will bother to listen.

True, their customer service is better, but not all honda dealers are the same. And you say with your honda civic and accord you don't have problems? I got a new(then) 2002 honda civic and after 6 months developed rust on the hood and some other places. after trading it for the pilot, they have all the recalls about transmission and clunking of the brakes and you probably never heard of the all the tranny failures in several oddyseys, acura TL's and RL's. I guess the difference is not in the quality of the vehicle but at least they use KY gel when they shaft you. your evo without mods should have no problems

Wow, there's 30 minutes of my life I can't have back (reading this thread entirely)

This is my first Mitsu, upgrading from a Hyundai (LOL).

A couple of points:
1) it is good to have a forum(s) like this to know what to be aware of. I know to listen for certain noises, check for rusting, etc.

2) customer service is a dealer to dealer thing. Forums are great to find which dealers in your area are the best. We have some losers in the DC area, and some that are great. it's just a matter of finding them

3) I agree with the pay to play -- if you mod or race, don't expect to keep your warranty. If you baby it and just drive it to work and it breaks, you have a legit gripe for any warranty claims.

That's all for now. I must say how much I love this car. Big grin every day when I drive to work. Bigger grin whenever I see an "S" curve sign on the road.

It was the car not that sold me. I wanted AWD and performance. It was the only car on the lot that I was interested in. I looked at Subaru and Volvo, but the EVO won out. I do not know if I would get another Mitsubishi, but when it comes time to get another car, I will keep an open mind and when I find a car that fits what I am after, I will get it. After the kids move out it will most likely be an RWD 2 seater, I'm thinkin' NSX or 911.

No problems with the mitsubishi, but no claims either, they warned me about the paint and maintenence and I had to watch the video. Dealer lets me know what mods are acceptable and which will void warranty. Personal complaints about the vehicle are minor. Floormats are cheap, radio fair, some noises in dash. I take it to the dealer for oil changes ($50) but they do give me free coffee and donuts

9K miles clutch fine. Rotors rust and brakes squeal after I wash it. I get paranoid reading the forum and question my purchase, but once I am back behind the wheel, I know I made the right decision to get the EVO.

You play, you pay. If you beat the hell out of a car and dont expect it to break at some point, you are nuts. A clutch going out at 10k miles? who cares? put a new one in. I'm sure it has nothing to do with clutch drops, slips, power shifting, and not knowing how to drive stick.

If you expected a bullet proof car then you bought the wrong car.
I've had clutches go out after 1500 miles. Why? that is what 65+
passes will do to a clutch. Oh well.

Depends on where you live. Houston BMW/Woodlands BMW dealership treats me like royalty. The Mitsu dealership where I took the multiple eclipses I owned was horrid and tried to rip me alot.

If more people demanded Sequential Manual Transmissions in the Evo, the clutch would be a non issue. It would be controlled by the car and therefore not "abusable".. I'll probably pick up my MR, and then the next Evo will have SMT and cruise, ergh..

There is no option for how I feel, so here it goes:
OK I'm walking through the trailer park. I pass a smelly dirty kid with snot and koolaid all over his shirt. I almost trip on the front door of a house that has somehow dislodged itself from its hinges and is blocking the dirt path I'm walking on, which seems to be the most common route through the rubbish. I light a smoke and glance through the curtainless livingroom window of a decrepit trailer, sagging in the middle from its cinder block supports sinking into the muddy ground. Inside I spot a family. Your classic park inhabitants, watching a small TV on top of an obviously broken large wooden console TV. I could almost see Jerry Springer reflecting back at me from their glazed eyeballs. But wait, what is this? Do my eyes deceive me? She is GORGEOUS! Somehow that family of mutants had spawned a beautiful blonde bombshell, and there she was sitting on that very couch with the pit stained undershirt wearing beer gutted father, and her withered chainsmoking mother. At that moment, I knew I had to have her, and to make a long story short, I did.

Do I expect much from her family? Well, they can't even pay their rent let alone give me anything to help support my new girl. I don't even like the idea of her being around them anymore. To people I know, I don't like to admit I even know them. I try to insist they don't take advantage of me, and treat me fairly and with respect, but what can I do, so is the way of the world. They somehow created a beautiful, unique, outrageously sexy creature, so for that I am grateful.

Is she perfect? Well, not by any stretch of the imagination, her rough edges shine through clear as day. But she's hot, has a great rack, tight ***, and is a complete freak in the bedroom. So, at the end of the day, does it really matter to me that she curses like a sailor, can't name half of the 50 states, and has a chipped tooth?

NOPE
