Your view of Mitsubishi now...
I really think that a lot of people in this thread would be better off if they would be a little bit more firm with the dealership.
You have rust on your front bumper? Covered by warranty, have Mitsu fix it.
Your clutch fails at 5k miles? Quit launching it like a ****ing Camaro. You want to drag? Go buy a Mustang Cobra.
If I came back to the dealership to pick my car up and it had 30 miles more on the odometer I wouldn't drive the car off the lot until I had the Customer Service Manager over to DOCUMENT the joy ride. Who did the joy riding? Where did he go? What did he do? Who is his manager and why did he allow it?
Paint is ****? Why did you buy a car that has ****ty paint or has "rail dust" (whatever the hell that is)?
And in the end, if you can afford a $30,000 specialized, impractical car like this one you can also afford an attorney. Exercise your rights, don't let people like that smug District Manager bully you around. You possess a NEW car with a bumper-to-bumper warranty. PUSH BACK, don't just bend over.
I drove the Evo and I think it is the most spectacular handling car I've driven, and that includes Corvettes, Supras, RX-7s, WRXs, and an NSX. The car is a BARGAIN. That said, I rank Mitsu at the bottom of the Japanese automakers. If this car were a Toyota it would sell for $5000 more for the name alone.

What broke on your evo? Oh ya that's right you don't EVEN HAVE ONE so how do you know what sucks? How do you know the person posting *****ing about them even has one? You don't right? So come on man, if I wanted a car that was without flaw I would of kept my NSX, I bought the EVO for a track car that is cheap to make go fast that's it. I have other cars like the TL that I drive when I want something that is slow without problems and is quiet. Also what paint problems do you have again? Oh damn that's right just what people say right? I hope you don't listen to everyone in the stock market as well. I guess that is what makes us different. I don't care what OTHERS say I do my own thing this car is GREAT and I have *0* paint problems and I am going to get my 7,000 mile oil change this week.

That is the normal level of "noise" on every enthusiast forum.
The issues that actually concern potential buyers such as myself are how Mitsu handles legit warranty claims (which they have gone out of their way to deny in several cases on this board alone), and things that NO new car should have such as rust and paint so poor it stains instantly and so poor that owners are already experiencing fading on cars less than one physical year old.
Those are serious problems... flaws in the build quality and process that Mitsu needs to address ASAP if they ever want to earn the business of new car customers from (just about any) other car brands.
If you want to take a basis of $30k as a price point for a car, you can easily find two juxtaposed vehicles - for example an Acura CL TypeS versus the Evo8. One is a luxury coupe, one is a performance car. They both hit the same price point and yet compete in two completely different markets.
One is FWD, naturally aspirated, full of luxury features. The other is AWD, turbo, and just generic interior features that will wear and break quicker but the car itself is built to perform.
Picture two sliding scales at opposite ends. One is Performance and the other is Luxury. Those are two viable scales where if you increase one, while keeping the price the same, you will likely need to decrease the other.
What some people here are trying to do is place "Basic New Car Expectations" on one of those scales and balance it against performance and that's just not logically possible. Basic New Car Expectations are what you expect from a brand new car of any price level - such as a car that's got a proper anti-rust treatment and a clearcoat on the paint that's thick enough to protect it - the primary job of the clearcoat. I am just picking those two examples since they are part of Basic New Car Expectations but they are things some people here think it's okay to put on the scale and balance versus Performance.
Sorry, it just doesn't work that way. It's a logical impossibility on a new car purchase, because it is exactly that - a NEW CAR. New Car Expectations do not compete against Performance. It doesn't matter what level of Performance you're at - any of the cars when purchased new are expected to come with proper new car build quality and condition whether it's a Hyundai or a Benz.
Just because YOU are comfortable making your new car a project car and don't mind do-it-yourself maintenance doesn't somehow mean it's acceptable for a new car to have such issues. All it means is you would probably be a good candidate to spend the $30k on a used car since you would get more "car" for your money and wouldn't mind the extra maintenance and ACCEPTABLE issues for a used car such as the possibility of rust and the paint being old and worn/stained/scratched/etc.
I don't think I can make that any more clear. That has been my point all along. Ignoring the side-tracks, focus on the point - Mitsu has poor quality control and build quality on the Evo8 currently. If they fix that, I would consider spending my money on a Mitsu. Until they do they will not get my money for an unacceptable condition for a new product.

That's such a strawman. Unless you've ignored about 75 threads in this forum over the past few months you know exactly what sucks according to owners of the car.
How do you know the person posting *****ing about them even has one? You don't right?
Oh right, no one here is really an Evo8 owner. Nice conspiracy theory spawning there.
I guess that is what makes us different. I don't care what OTHERS say I do my own thing this car is GREAT and I have *0* paint problems and I am going to get my 7,000 mile oil change this week.
What makes us different is that I do extensive research before I drop $30k on a new car when it's a brand I'm unfamiliar with, and more so when I see so many complaints, especially when they're about things that just shouldn't be happening to brand new cars. Money means more to me since I have much less of it than you. I think that's totally understandable, is it not? I'm sorry but I cannot be as carefree in my spending as you can. If I spend $30k on a car and it's a piece of junk, I'm screwed where as I guess you can probably just trade it in and take a little hit on it economically and be okay or spend a lot more money to keep it in good shape.
Learn that not everyone is as financially flexible and free as you and you might understand why some people put a lot more thought and care into their car puchases and maybe you won't be so antagonistic when people are cautious about buying an Evo8.

Also read Edmunds most like it there. Also what about Road and track? Also I have a friend who is a evo tech and has seen 0 problems with them. Not everyone who has one is on the internet and not everyone on the internet has one.

Rust on the bumper...waiting for the DM because they want to see it. DOnt know what they will do, so thats still up in the air.
Clutch failing - who the **** said I was dumping the clutch. 1000 miles worth of freeway and breakin. Not everyone is launching the car like you think, stop generalizing everyone. Some dont some do. Just like the problem, not every single EVO has problems, but there are still quite a few that do.
Why I picked up the car after it had 30 extra miles on the car - It WAS doucmented. I had to wait for the DM to discuss this further. District manager says "So what, it doesnt prove anything, you can get a lawyer if you want, there is nothing that can be proved." Car detailer had it and said NO we didnt take it for a drive. Dealer said.. i dunno we didnt take it for a drive. DM says TOO BAD.
Rail dust - i picked up the car at night, and its not visible. When i did see it, they said it is common and can be taken out easily. Which eventually they did after 3 times at the detailer. Now the paint is ****ty.
Getting an attorney...I am all for it, BUT I dont think an isolated problem like mine will get much help from an attorney. Thats why we are all here trying to get more insight on problems so we can work together and get this solved at the source.
As for that additional 5K for reliability, id pay it, and im sure many others would as well.
LIke i said before, if you posted to help our problems thanks, if not and you are being like those ****in idiots who dont read and generalize all the problems as driver related issues, or say that its only 30K what do you expect "Ford Escort quality!?," go apply to be the District Managers, you have the exact same mentality.
Sorry for the long post everyone. If you are having real problems, I'm all for listening and trying to help, otherwise.. get off this thread if you dont like what you are hearing.
I have been reading this forum for a couple of years now and have been driving Mitsubishis for way longer...
This is the funniest thread I have read in a long time.
I remember saying before the EVO was released that we need to be prepared for all the complaints of grinding syncros, slipping clutches, ticking lifters and warped brake rotors. Well it looks like that time is here!
Ohhh...the EVO is not a DSM...its made in Japan not Normal, IL. Shut the $%&# up! The Galant VR4 was made in Japan and it shared all of the same problems as a DSM. Gee...the EVO is suffering the same problems as a DSM's....Its not where it is manufactured but how the car is engineered. Both were engineered in Japan.
Mitsubishi’s has been building AWD cars for many years now. They know how to make a strong clutch. They also know what America or any other country will do to an AWD tranny with a strong clutch. Destroy it!!!
If you run your car hard it will break. Indy cars break, rally cars break, fighter jets break. Anything high performance has a short life span. Do you think the 6 speed sequential that you hear whining in a WRC car is going to last 150,000 miles on the street? I doubt it would last 5000 miles!!! Will the brake pads on the NASCAR last 40,000 miles? Lucky if they last 200. Run you car hard and be prepared to pay the price. STOP SNIVELING AND WHINING!!! You need to find a different car, the EVO is not for you! Trust me things will only get worse with the EVO over time.
Anyone on this forum that Autocrosses, drag races, road races or rallies their EVO is cool in my book. Any one who does this and also wines about Mitsubishi as a company or their reliability needs a swift hard kick in the A$$!!!!!.
Go to www.dsmtalk.com
You will probably see 80% of the problems that will crop up on the EVO. Thank god DSM's are mostly out of warranty so we don’t see this type of thread. DSM motto: Figure out what broke, Fix it and move on until something else breaks!
favre95 your post really hit the nail on the head!!!

In my opinion, if you buy a car like the evo be prepared to spend alot of money on maintaing it. Hell my talon cost a ton to maintain....but I didn't car it was fast as hell. Nothing major ever broke on it ever...just small crap. my advice to you....if you are that unhappy with your evo....wrap it around a tree....then you can try and sue mitsubishi for faulty AWD and pay off your evo!!!

There is a lot of whining and there is a big lack of education on many buyers parts who should have known what they were getting into, but there is also a huge lack of support and proper customer service on many dealerships end.
again as well posted but probably hard to get through to some people, high performance does not mean that minimum new car expectations should be removed. If you're car's wheels fell off driving off the lot, would that be ok just becuase it is a "hi-po" car? No. If a clutch melts from drag racing, is that ok. Yes. The car needs a few minor upgrades and if it raised the price of the car $500 - $1000, it is a big shame on mitsu that those corners were cut. Improve the paint/painting process/QC. Treat your customers like you want them to stay your customers. Stand behind your product. Work with a customer, 50% of the bill if damage could have been customer neglect. But out right denial before any work is even started. That's really shoddy.

Big boss: "I thought we caned this AWD crap in 99 and said we would never look back!"
little boss: "What if we just snuck like 6000 EVO units to the US and had the dealers really turn up the heat on the warranty...maybe we could put the car in a movie...Like FF2 or something?"
Big boss: "OK let try it for one year and see what happens"
Remember, the dealers have seen a lot of AWD abuse over the last 13 years as well. They are not stupid and know what to look for.
Great post, also what about the video and the test you took about breaking in the car? And the oil you knew about before you got the car. Again I am going back to the I can not afford this car but I am going to beat the **** out of it and if it has a problem
will fix it. Almost everyone here said they don't have the money to fix it when something crapped out.

Asking if this car was right for you? I think they did make a fair attempt at educating the public. The dealer is sure as heck not going to try and disuade the sale though. Dealerships dont give two $hits about the customer. They are out to make as much money as possible. Some dealerships like warranty work some do not. It depends on what products they sell, how busy they are etc. Remember, there is always more profit doing a non waranty job than a waranty job. People need to remember the difference between Mitusbishi as a company and the dealers. As far as paint quality and such. Yeah I bet it sucks when your hood starts to chip on a $30,000 car. Anyone want to see what the hood looks like on my red 1990 Talon with 150,000 miles? I think you guys would laugh. People have been complaining about the paint on Mitsubishis for years...a little research would go a long way. Why is Mitsubishi so agressive with the warrantys? Remember, they are not new to selling AWD performance cars in the US. They have been doing it for 13 years now. 3000 VR4/AWD Eclipse/Talon/Laser/Galant VR4. Remember the 7 year 70,000 warranty Chrysler made famous in the early 90's to try and bring back the American consumer? The AWD Eagle Talon was a Chrysler product and came with the 7/70 warranty. Boy did it ever get used too! That was a big learning experience for Mitsubishi! They kept learning it over and over with the later models as well. I bet for every 1 AWD warranty they deny, 5 slip through that should have been. If you saw all of the recals on the early 1G's it is hard to imagine that the made money on the AWD's even before the warranty claims. Brake rotors changed, timing belts changed, lifters changed, transfer case changed, seat belts....what did I miss...I cant remember it all. I can just imagine the guys in the Mitsubishi US corporate office deciding if they should bring over the EVO.

little boss: "What if we just snuck like 6000 EVO units to the US and had the dealers really turn up the heat on the warranty...maybe we could put the car in a movie...Like FF2 or something?"
Big boss: "OK let try it for one year and see what happens"
Remember, the dealers have seen a lot of AWD abuse over the last 13 years as well. They are not stupid and know what to look for.
Mitsubishi told the general public over and over that this car was going to require a lot of maintance. Remember the adds and technical brochures talking about the soft compound tires and such?

Mitsu did try to educate them. Though people still aren't educated, so that is the buyers fault for not paying attention. But regardless of the increased maintenance costs ($1,000 a month total ownership cost, IMHO) Mitsu has some quality issues they need to address. If their paint has been bad and is a known to suck for many years. I'd say they are really dropping the ball. But if they keep making shoddy goods, sales will drop and that usually means they disappear.. oh wait sales are dropping.. What's next, either a 180' turn around and quick to better, higher quality goods, or exit stage left. Domestic manufacturers were in the same bout 15 years ago. and it took them about half that to turn their act around and now many domestic vehicles are very nice and built well. The ball is in Mitsu's court. Just becuase someone has been stupid in the past, is that an excuse to remain stupid forever.

I don't think it was necessarily too many claims that killed the AWD's, it was also lack of sales. The vast number of NA Eclipses and 3000's sold far exceeded the turbos. Now, they're bringing the soul of all those cars back with a strict warning to all to expect a higher maintenance schedule. But I imagine after this outing the car will probably have only a three year life cycle at best before its cancelled. Then everybody can go back to *****ing that Mitsubishi sucks because they don't sell "cool turbo AWD cars" anymore.
I love how so many people take internet "hear-say" as absolute fact. I find it especially ridiculous that much of these reliability problems are being harped on by people who haven't even owned an Evolution.
