If the car takes a long long time to heat then then its the thermostat that is stuck in the open position.

When my girl's geo metroid's heat went out, it was the damn heat plug(it looks like the inside of a light bulb) it goes directly into the blower.

I owned a DSM and one winter day no heat. I figured the thermostat was stuck open and obtained a new thermostat. When I pulled the installed thermostat it was shut. Puzzled by this, I put both thermostats in a pan of water and heated them on a stove. The thermostat that came from the car opened first. It was opening before the coolant got hot enough to provide heat for the cabin. So, this is another mode of failure.

Also make sure you heater knob isn't the issue. The heater controls were an issue on the early EVO's Mitsu put out an upgraded blend door kit to fix the issue
