Help! I could use your advice
Help! I could use your advice
Ok so long story, basically a month ago i bought a used evo 9 from a non Mitsubishi Dealership. The car came stock but i could tell it had been modded since the A-piller had been drilled and the plastic valve cover thing was missing.
Anyrate the car ran just fine to me but had a check engine light, which they told me was being sent to the Mitsubishi dealership to be fix, all it was was a bad o2 sensor. So i buy the car, i love it. A week goes by and Mitsubishi calls me and says we got the o2 sensor in, come on down and we will get it in under warranty. Great!
They Install the sensor and CEL is still on, they tell me must be the other sensor. So 2 weeks later i go back and get it installed. CEL still on, they tell me its a Running Lean code but a new MAF will fix it. They tell me its fixed and i drive home.... CEL 1 mile away.
Week later i bring it back and they tell me the ECU was heavily modified and that's what is causing the car to run lean. Now they wont cover ECU work under warranty, but they would reflash to stock to see if it fixed it. It didnt, still Lean. They tell me 1100 for a new ECU. I told them i had a connection to a street tuner and he actually recommended i have him look it it.
I have had the car a little over a month and i really didnt wanna put money into it yet. I was going to stage 2 mod it at the most evenually, just not yet.
So basically im asking if ppl think i should get a tune? Will a tune lead to other problems? To me the car runs fine, I dont hear any knocking and i have pushed it pretty hard. A part of me wants to ***** out the ppl that sold it to me but im sure i signed something saying i cannot return it, i hate buying used cars....

Always read the fine print, sorry to hear about your luck though...
A good tuner should be able to modify the tune and correct the lean problem with ease. Its good you aren't seeing any knocking, post up what your air to fuel ratios were when you get it tuned, just to see how lean it is getting. A good first step would be to get a wideband installed just to monitor your engine.

Not Evo specific, but they may be able to help you out:

Note that this is not a recommendation as I've never done business with them.

Are you sure that is the only code it is throwing? Take it to autozone or advanced and make sure. Get the code numbers and submit them here. If I were you, I would either find a specific reputable shop that works on Evos, or go buy a nice wideband setup and get a tuner to do an e-mail tune. Everything should be alright, and you should even save a little money on the e-mail tune as opposed to the dyno route.
Good luck

It sounds like the previous owner modded and then took off all of the parts before trading it in. It sucks but I would definitely take it to get tuned asap. Try to get the dealership to cover it since they sold it to you that way....at least unless you bought it as is. If that is the case you will have to pony up for the tune.
