Doesn't the vortex generator increase downforce by swirling the air and thereby causing more air to hit the wing more effectively? So, a vortex generator would increase the likeliness of the wing breaking.
The VG draws faster air from outside of the boundry layer to the skin of the vehicle, which re-energizes the boundry layer, helping it to stay in contact with the vehicle and continuing laminar flow. This is what increases the airflow across the trunk of the vehicle, increasing the effectiveness of the wing. Without the VG, the boundry layer will break away from the laminar flow of the roof at the peak between the roof and rear winshield and create a low pressure region of air (and creates turbulent airflow between the rear windshield and the wing). This low pressure increases drag.

I believe the fastest i've gone is 130 for my first track day. I've never noticed anything but i hope that I don't have this happen as well.

Might have to get an VIII like ppl have suggested.

I too have touched 140 mph before... not that I was paying super-close attention, but I didn't notice anything. (This was on my previous Evo IX.)

The STI wing, on the other hand...

i'm actually a little bit annoyed now, because when i brought it in to the dealer way back they said it was vandalism (someone like pushing down on the wing or something) and wouldn't replace it

My wing also split on the leading edge just about dead center, '06 evo9, now as soon as I hit 90ish it starts flapping so I've been taking it easy until I find another one in GG

The 9 wing was made thinner than the 8"s wing so stability is not as good. Your okay up to 155-160. After that, the downforce created on the 9 wing is very strong and can/will crack the wing. It gets even worse if you have the lip which adds even more downforce. If your gonna go above 160 get an 8 wing.

^ Luckily for us, Evos top out at around that speed anyway... and very rarely do the cars ever see that speed.
