The OE oil filters are absolutely nothing special- cut one open and see. I still have one left but when it's gone will just use the cheap purolators- they're fine.

It is not oil pressure that opens the bypass valve, it is the pressure drop across the filter media. More filter media means less pressure drop. More filter media means less chance of plugging.

so what's the concensus, stick with OEM or is Amsoil or Wix better? I need to change my oil soon, but I heard the new oem filters are garbage.

I run Amsoil filters and motor oil.

On just about every car forum I've ever been on, never once has anyone had anything negative to say about Amsoil's products other than the slightly higher cost.

I trust that after 20years of building turbo motors mitsubishi knew what they were doing when they designed the latest filter for the 4g63. I don't run higher than normal oil pressures so i always run the oem filter. Never had any issues, it is cheap, i don't see a reason to change.

I think you mean "AC Delco" Denso is just Denso.

So far, all of the aftermarket filters I've seen for our cars are taller and have a smaller diameter.
I just don't like the fact that with the taller filter you can look under the car and see it hanging down. I just hate to think of something striking it.

I've noticed that too but I've also had a dealership give me a tall OEM filter instead of the short stubby one. After that, I never really went back to my local dealership and drove the extra 20 miles to get the good one.

I just recently bought a Napa Gold filter (Wix filter) and so far, it's as short and stubby as my OEM one. I think I found my new dealer in filters.

I just bought a few OEM filters from the dealership. They were the short stubby ones. Question, is there any harm in running a OEM filter for say a year given the mileage is less than 3,000? I have a DD now so my Evo only see about 3,000-4,000 miles a year and basically only requires a oil change once a year. Is this bad on the filter?

Oil & Filter every 5 months or 5000 miles. Your situation would be every 5 months. (to quote the FSM).

I've been using the stock one for awhile now too. Instead of having the hassle to keep going to the dealer to buy em. I stock up on them lol. buy like 2-3 at a time x]

Oops! I was meaning to say just Denso. I order a lot of AC Delco for our American vehicles =P Thanks for clarifying.
