Pull the little door out down by your left knee. Once open, it will snap out. There are some fuses on the back.

Through the opening see a big headed screw. If that screw is loose, and it likes to work loose, you will get a noise that sounds like it is coming from the A pillar or the base of the windshield. Worth checking.

Hey, this door right?

I took a look in but I didn't see a screw - can you point me in the right direction?

I was working on my alarm this weekend. I had the hood latch dash panel out. While I was at it, I started pounding the panels/pillar with my fist. I hit the dash overhang (above gauge cluster) and it made that squeak noise. I hit everywhere else and none made that noise.

I will take out my gauge cluster today and see if there is anything loose.

I tried the hitting, didn't get anything. Haven't heard from the other guy about the screw or w/e either and I didn't see anything while looking in that panel.

I took the car for a spin today - 61 degrees outside. To my supreme annoyance, barely a squeak out of the car. I can still hear it, sometimes, it's very faint. So I guess temperature relation is a symptom here. Dealer's taking a look tomorrow but now I'm not so sure they'll even be able to reproduce the noise.

Thanks guys, I'll continue keeping you updated

I'm the guy with the screw suggestion. I'm trying to install Suse 11.2 on my computer and it is blowing up in my face so I might as well go to the garage and look for the screw. I'll get back to you.

In the mean time, I was finally able to pinpoint the noise in my dash by using an engine stethoscope while driving. All the other bouncing, hammering and pounding I did was zero help.

I have an 8 and there are no electronics associated with the door - only a pocket I put my registration in. Straight back and at the bottom of the fuse box, is the screw. If your car has it you can't miss it so I am guessing it does not.

UPDATE

the dealer had the car - they identified the noise

They said the squeak was related to some of the retaining clips on the center cluster were loose, so they insulated them under warranty at no charge - even though I've actually personally removed the gauge cluster to put trustz gauges on it.

I haven't gotten the car back yet but hopefully this fixes it!
