Found a boost leak

Thought I'd post this since I thought it was worthy of a thread. Been working on a boost leak with a buddy for about a weak and everytime we'd pump it up past 5lbs we'd get this loud high pitched whining noise. We couldn't pin point it because it was so loud. I thought it was my BOV so we isolated it and it held 25psi....so then I thought it was the coupler on my turbo, tested it and it held. WTF couldn't find it.

After about an hour, we tested everything around the intkake tube, I jacked the car up and got underneath. Started feeling around my LICP pipe and coupler and didn't feel any air. So I reached up to my turbo to check the wastegate and the noise changed. I felt around and found it was the metal tube that connects to the turbo then connects to the LICP. It's a PITA to get to the 2 12mm bolts that are holding it but anyway I got it out. There is a metal crush type gasket on there that you could see the pipe was sitting wrong on the gasket and I know the turbo has never been swapped or tampered with so it had to have been leaking from the factory.

Gasket was in great shape but I went ahead and swapped it out with a new one since it is a crush type. Anyone else heard of them coming like this from the factory or just a coincidence that mine was this way? it's an 03 with 43k.

I would of pressurized the system and had at it with soapy water, works EVERY time even with the smallest of leaks.

But to answer your question, I don't know own a lancer and have zero first hand experience with it

i have an 03 as well.....and mine didn't leak there until i changed mine because it was leakin on the copuler that goes form that J pipe to the IC.......than when i swap it out now it will leak from that J pipe to the turbo...and i coudln't never resolve it..been a while now and i can barely drive my car..haven't boosted in so long...haven't gotten aroudn to it..

i think i need to buy a brand new J pipe, last one i got was used and that could be the issue...

but yes..those two 12mm bolts are a big PITA, not to mention i stripped one and had to buy another...one that is barely touching the oil return line...were you able to repair yours?

Yeah mine held 25psi. I am going to do another though next weekend just to be sure. I didn't use the "factory" gasket either. I used some of that make your own gasket material and then some gasket maker to seal it completely. I'll test it again and let you know if it holds.

I cut one out myself then used the tube style gasket maker. I just put a small bead on the edge to ensure it would seal up.

Ahh boost leaks. They are the bane of everyones existence. I had a wicked bad one at the TB. Had to replace the TB and everything...was robbing me of 35whp. No exaggeration either. I hate boost leaks.

I only had 2, that one and my TB seals. Which I was surprised by but I was extra **** when installing my ic pipes. I am hoping by next weekend to have it all worked out so I can finish my tune.

I hate boost leaks as well, especially ones like this. It was such a loud whining noise that you couldn't pin point where it was coming from. I thought my tester was bad, so I resealed the tester. I thought it was my BOV so I was swapping BOVs....Thought it was my intake so I took it off about 50 times. What a PITA!!!!!
