In my yonger days I used to take my 2 year old son in my 86mm 14:1 comp. NA EG Hatch. He loved it. Loved every second of it.

Now he is 6 and he loves the Evo every bit as much as the old Honda. I want hime to have an appreciation for cars and mechanics. Start them young.

And yes, I provided him with ear muffs when riding around in the hatch. That thing was stupid loud.

The EVO is a pretty rigid structure.. Isn't it? If you really want to, go with the EVO X.

I will chime in. I am 36 and when I sold my S I was daily driving my R32 with my daughter in there. Had her in the back since she was an infant in the R32. I got sick of the noise and driving on full set of coils not to mention the 2 doors. So I decided to go with an Evo IX MR. I have no problem putting my 5 year old in the back. Its big enough for her and I don't feel unsafe or like I am putting her at risk. Its more of a pain when someone pulls up next to me and wants to race or be stupid. My car is modded so the exhaust tends to be a bit loud sometimes but my VW is loud to so guess my kid is used to it.

She enjoys being in the car and I got the Recaro kid seat to match the interior.. So after a long winded response I say go for it..

It's really not the age of the driver or the car, it's the driver.
You can give a 16 year old an Evo and if he has and sense or maturity he can handle himself. And to the guy who said something about their age ending in -teen is dumb, and this is coming from a well educated and disciplined 18 yr old w/ and evo.

Got two kids 1 and 3 yr old girls. Never hesistate to carry them PROPERLY RESTRAINED in my Evo VII. Cuz if'n they climbing all over your head and lying on the back dash, then even 5 mph in a grocery cart is unsafe

I have a young son (under a year) and I was wondering how parents that drive Evo's feel about the safety of the car. I'm in the process of selling my current car, but I was hoping to get a used Evo or STi. I know the Subaru has very good crash test ratings, but it has some other problems I'd rather not have to worry about (blowing motors in the newer models).

I don't want to risk the safety of my family just because of a stupid car, but I see a lot of parents driving Lancer OZ's and Ralliarts (the older ones) and I figure they can't be too bad safety-wise if that many parents use them.
If all of the above is truly a concern, don't buy an Evo. I have young children. Considering a car's safety rating never even occurred to me, and I can't see how it can (ever) became a determinate in my household. You, OTOH, feel differently. As such, it makes sense for you to buy a car that gives you more of a piece of mind. Good luck.

To the OP, I would have my 2 kids in my Evo, but as someone said above, I would drive very carefully.

As for the teen thing, I think some teens can be responsible drivers, and I think it's up to the parents to decide if their son/daughter is responsible enough to drive a car that can go 100mph around corners. But here's some interesting info I found about teenage driving...

I have a 1 year old daughter and 3 year old son (and a 14 year old, but she doesnt count for this topic :P). Right now, both car seats are in the back seat of my Evo We just got back from a nice cruise, went to a park and did some grocery shopping. Typically I only stick the kids in my car on the weekends (wife has a '08 dodge caravan for regular transportation), but sometimes to take them to preschool during the week, or running to grab some food, etc.

I've never, ever, once felt that they were unsafe in the car. Safety, when your kids are in the car, is solely on the DRIVER, not the vehicle (IMO). If you drive like an idiot with kids in the car, doesnt matter what you are driving, min-van with airbags and a roll cage or a convertible .. unsafe driving is unsafe driving. Now, if your responsible and drive safely, you should be good. I don't take 35mph curves with the kids in the car, nor do I launch. Its about driving slowly and carefully. If you want to drive the evo like ya stole it, do not do it with kids in the car, period.

Knowing the lack of crash test ratings for the Evo, how safe do you feel your kids are?
Doesnt concern me, as i drive slowly and safely with the kids in the car. I could care less about the govt crash test ratings .. but im also a realist, I know that i dont have side impact airbags and such .. i just drive safe.

Do you think there is a real problem with toting kids around in your Evo, or do you have another car that is used for daily purposes?
Absolutely not. If I didnt work soo much (or I was a stay at home dad), I would drive my little ones in the Evo 100% of the time.

I also moved up from an 03 Lancer OZ to my 05 Evo .. drove the kids in the Lancer all the time too without concern. Drive carefully and your kids will be safe.

You should do a little more research. I don't have the exact numbers (I think amby might) but it was a very very very small batch of Subarus that had that issue and pretty much all of them (from what I have seen) have been covered under warranty, even heavily modded ones that could be attributed to the factory defect failure.
